the expanded definitions.

B. Establishing a Purpose for the Lesson

Alright, so today we will tackle another lesson that is (Students’ listen carefully)
connected to our discussion yesterday and that is to
give out expanded definitions of words. Our objectives
for today are the following:
a. Define what expanded definition is,
b. Determine what type of expanded definition is
used,
c. Demonstrate understanding of how to use
expanded definitions in real-world situations
Students are you ready? Yes sir. (students agreed in chorus)
C. Presenting examples/ instance of the new
lesson
But before we start with our lesson, I have a little game
called 4pics 1 word. I will give out four pictures that can
be related to our lesson for today and you will try to
guess what those words are.
Ready dear students? Yes sir

For the first set of pictures? What do you think is the

word?

Yes, that is right, now how about the second set of

pictures? What does it mean? Sir, it is expanded.

definitions in our lesson for today
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new
skills # 1
The words you answered are connected to our lesson
for today. Our topic for today is giving expanded
definition of words. But first let us define what are
expanded definitions, please read. Expanded definition
Are one or more paragraphs that attempt to explain
a complex term. It makes use of both technical and
operational definitions.

It has two patterns

 Term, class, and characteristics
 Characteristics, class, and term
Thank you, when we say expanded definition. It says
that it attempts to explain a complicated word, so let us
have an example and let us try to analyse it. Kindly
read. Carbohydrates are a food group including sugars,
starches, and cellulose.
Let us find the three parts of the definition.
What part are the carbohydrates? Sir, it is the term that we are expanding.
That is correct, how about the italicized words? Sir it is the class of the term.
Yes, and lastly, how about the underlined words?
What part are these? Sir, it is the characteristics of the term.

Alright, that is correct.

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new
skills # 2
Now that we are finished with the expanded definition,
now let us jump to the techniques in providing ways to
give expanded definition. Are you ready? Yes sir.

Kindly read the following. There are techniques in providing ways to give
expanded definition. The first one is example.

It is used to explain an abstract or complicated topic

through samples and illustration.
Eg: Trying squats, dips, and bench presses are some
of the easy compound exercises you can do inside
your house.
Just like the title itself, the first one—example is
giving a complicated topic an example or illustration
to be able to explain the certain term. How about the
next one, please read. Analogy is used to show comparison between two
things using their similarities. There must be a
connection between them.
Ex. The brain is part of the nervous system. It is like a
Central processing unit of the computer.
I have a question for you guys, does the example of
the brain and the cpu of the computer are connected in
some way?
Sir, yes, they have connection because the cpu is like
the brain of the whole computer and just like our
brain, it is the one that decides everything.
Yes, that is correct. Can I have another example of
analogy used in expanding definitions? The students answered.

Now, let us move on to the last of the technique which

is the description. In this one, you will use descriptive
words in order for you to give an expanded definition
of the term. Kindly read. Description is used to give details and more
information which includes the use of descriptive
words such as the use of colors, size, shape, or
numbers to name a few. It is used to visualize explain
the definition more vividly.

Ex. Anyone born between 1981 and 1996 are

considered a millennial. Millennials are mostly
watching television and exposed in using different
social media application

H. Making Generalization and Abstractions
about the Lesson
Alright! It looks like you really understand our lesson
for today. I want to test you more. Aside from
research, when can we use expanded definitions? The students answered.
I. Evaluating Learning
For our assessment today, you guys will define what
expanded definition is used based on the text. Please
answer this on a ¼ sheet of paper.

1. Speed is a concept that marks our time. Everybody

demanding new inventions that will speed up
production so that the constant cry of the bosses to
the workmen is speed it up! The maker of
