Marine Environments and Administration
Sir: M. IDREES
What is fouling and what are techniques used its removal?
Fouling & its Removal:
Fouling is the growth of unwanted material on surfaces that come into contact with
liquids, such as pipes, heat exchangers, and filter systems. Material buildup can
lead to equipment damage, higher energy costs, and reduced efficiency. The
removal of fouling should be careful in marine it is Marine fouling occurs when
organisms attach themselves to underwater objects like boats, rope, pipes and
building structures. Mussels are one of the biggest culprits. Once attached, they are
difficult to remove, Fouling can be removed by various methods such as
mechanical cleaning, chemical cleaning and thermal cleaning. Mechanical cleaning
requires the physical removal of soiled material. Dry cleaning uses solvents or
acids to dissolve the soiling material. In pyrogenic cleaning, the action of heat
burns off the soiled material. The type, extent, and use of fouling equipment affect
the processes used. To avoid this, it is important to inspect and clean the equipment
regularly.
