ACTIVITY __: The Nervous System

The nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and nerves) controls and coordinates various body functions. It
sends signals and receives responses from every organ of the body. The functional unit of the nervous system
is the neuron. There are three types of neurons that interact with one another: sensory, motor, associative or
interneurons.
Table 1. Types of Neurons according to Their Functions

Type Functions
Sensory neurons Carry signals to the brain or spinal cord
Motor neurons Carry signals from the brain or spinal cord to the muscles
Associated neurons or interneurons Link sensory and motor neurons

I. Complete the following statements. Choose you answer from the box below.

MAJOR DIVISIONS AND PARTS OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

A. The (1) ________________________________ serves as the main processing center for the entire nervous system.
It consists of two main components, namely the:
a. (2) _____________- this is an organ located within the skull that functions as organizer.
It has three main parts:
(3) __________________ - large, upper part of the brain that controls activity and thought.
(4) ___________________- the part under the cerebrum that controls posture, balance, and coordination.
(5) ___________________- the part that connects the brain to the spinal cord and controls autonomic function such as
breathing, digestion, heart rate, and blood pressure.

b. (6) ______________- this serves as the channel for signals between the brain and the rest of the body, and controls
simple musculoskeletal reflexes without input from the brain.

B. The (7) _______________________________ connects the central nervous system to the organs and limbs. It has
two main divisions:
a. (8) ______________________ is associated with the voluntary control of body movements and has two main parts:
(9) _______________________-the nerves that carry motor and sensory signals between the spinal cord and the body.
(10) _____________________- the nerve fibers that carry information into and out of the brain stem.

b. (11) ________________________ is associated with the involuntary control of body movements and has two
subdivisions:
(12) _______________________- it is activated when the body is in a dynamic role or stress (e.g. , increased heart rate
and breathing, dilation of pupil, sweating, etc.)
(13) _______________________- it maintains body functions and restores the body to normal or relaxed mode.
Sympathetic Somatic Nervous System Spinal nerves
Parasympathetic Spinal Cord Cranial nerves
Brain Brain stem Autonomic Nervous System
Peripheral Nervous System Cerebellum
Central Nervous System Cerebrum
