Auto Blade Assist (ABA) Function

The Automated Blade Assist (ABA) is designed in order to reduce operator fatigue. The Automated
Blade Assist includes a set of functions that are automated in order to improve the efficiency of the
operator. The ABA will also improve the consistency of a normal dozing cycle. These functions are
designed for basic stripping operations. These functions can also be applied to other applications of
dozing. The functions that are available currently are listed:

z Auto Pitch

z Auto Spread

z Auto Return

z Auto Pitch Blade Height Compensation

Note: The Auto Spread, Auto Return, and Auto Pitch Compensation functions require Auto Carry to be
installed.

Note: The Auto Blade Assist (ABA) capability is only available on machines equipped with dual tilt
hydraulics.

These functions are used in a normal dozing cycle. A dozing cycle consists of the following segments:
"load", "carry", "spread" and "return". The operator will cycle through each segment by using the mode
select button switch on the blade control handle. The functions of the ABA are armed by selecting the
"ABA" switch. Then, the ABA is activated by pressing the mode select button switch. The button on the
right hand side of the blade control handle is the manual select switch. The ABA feature will be armed
and the ABA will remain in this state if the manual select switch is pressed. However, the ABA will not
be active. The functions of the ABA may be activated or the functions of the ABA may be reactivated
by pressing the mode select switch. The ABA will be activated at a standard initial point according to

the gear of the machine. The segments of the ABA can be incremented by forward or reverse shifts of
the machine. A machine that has the ABA function will also have Auto Pitch. After the "ABA" has been
armed, the display of the Advisor will indicate the specific feature that is activated while the operator is
using the ABA.

The mode select switch is used to scroll through the following functions. The sequence of the functions
for the ABA are listed:

The ABA switch below the advisor is used to activate the auto pitch function. The ABA switch on the
right hand console is used to deactivate the ABA function. While ABA is armed, the ABA indicator on
the instrument cluster is on. When ABA is disarmed, the ABA indicator on the instrument cluster is off.
The Advisor informs the operator about the operations of the ABA function. The operator uses the mode
select switch on the left side of the blade control handle to activate the different modes of ABA. The
manual selector switch on the right side of the blade control handle is used to deactivate the ABA
function. In order to reactivate the ABA function, the mode select switch is pressed again.

From the Settings/Implement Menu, use the appropriate ARROW button in order to highlight the
Implement Setup option, then press the "OK" button. This will cause the Implement Setup Menu to be
displayed on the screen.

The Auto Blade Pitch option will display a sub-menu that allows the operator to adjust settings for the
following Auto Blade Assist (ABA) functions:

z Blade pitch setpoint for LOAD

z Blade pitch setpoint for CARRY

z Blade pitch setpoint for SPREAD

These parameters may be adjusted in the same fashion as the adjustable parameters from the Implement
Setup Menu. The following table describes the configurable settings for the implements.

NOTICE
Once ABA is armed, depressing the mode select switch may cause the
ABA to move the blade automatically.

After the ABA is armed initially, the Advisor will show the following display: "NOT RESET". Then,
the operator will press the mode select switch on the blade control handle. Now, the ECM will
automatically retract the tilt cylinders to the full back position. During this time, the Advisor will
display:

Disabling Conditions

The ABA function will be disabled if any of the following conditions are present. This condition will be
reported to the operator on the Advisor.

"SERVICE" - This message appears during any calibration procedure. This message appears regardless
of arming of the ABA.

"CHECK CONTROLS" - This message appears if the powerup test has failed. This message appears
regardless of arming the ABA.

"IMPLEMENTS OFF" - This message appears if the implement lockout switch is in the LOCKED
position. This message appears regardless of the arming of the ABA.

"LOW ENGINE SPD" - This message appears if the low idle switch has been pressed and ABA is still
active.

If the ABA function is armed and the conditions that may disable the machine have been resolved, the
message "RESET" will be displayed in order to instruct the operator to reset the blade pitch. See the
topic "Normal Auto Blade Assist Operation".

following operations:

z Loading

z Carrying

z Spreading

Note: If the operator adjusts the pitch of the blade during the process of resetting, the process of
resetting will not be correct. The blade must be reset again.

Note: The process of resetting is faster when the engine is operating at higher engine speeds.

Then, the tilt cylinders will extend to the loading position. The following message will be displayed on
the Advisor:

z "READY TO CARRY"

The blade is ready to be loaded. The operator will load the blade using the blade control handle. When
the blade is completely loaded the operator will press the mode switch to advance to the carry mode.
The ECM will move the tilt cylinders to the carry position. The operator will control blade height using
the blade control handle. If the machine is equipped with AutoCarry, the ECM will also control blade
height to maintain maximum efficient load during the carry mode. Advisor will display the following
message: "CARRY".

Note: During load and carry operations, the height of the blade is manually controlled by the operator.
The operator uses the blade control handle in order to control the height of the blade. During the spread
operation, the height of the blade can be controlled automatically by the ECM when Auto Carry has
been installed.

z "CARRY"

The machine should be carrying the load. When the operator presses the mode select switch again, the
spread mode will be activated. The tilt cylinders will move to the spread position. The operator selected
the spread position previously. Also, the auto spread function of the ECM will retract the lift cylinders in
order to raise the blade. The Advisor will display the following message:

z "SPREAD"

The machine should be spreading the load. If a spread rate has been selected by the operator, the lift
cylinders will retract until the blade has been raised to the preselected height. Next, the system will
return to the return mode. The return process is performed in three steps:

z Ready to return

z Resetting of the blade

z Return

When the machine has finished spreading the load, the return mode is initiated. The return mode is

https://198.101.110.37:8443/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisw... 2/9/2009

initiated when the operator selects reverse gear. The following message will appear on the message
center:

z "RETURN"

Note: If the operator presses the mode select switch after spreading, the Advisor will display "READY
TO RETURN" until the operator selects the reverse gear. The machine is usually in reverse at this time.

When the ECM determines that the machine is moving in the reverse direction, the reset process for the
blade will begin automatically. The ECM will retract the tilt cylinders. The ECM will define this
position as the position of zero pitch. Now, the ECM will calculate the preset tilt position for the
following operations:

z Loading operation

z Carrying operation

z Spreading operation

Then, the tilt cylinders will be extended to the preset load position. During the process of resetting, the
auto return function of the ECM will adjust the blade to a preset return height simultaneously. When the
operator selects the forward gear or the neutral gear, the ECM will activate the "ready to carry mode"
automatically. The following message appears on the Advisor:

z "READY TO CARRY"

The dozing cycle is now complete and the system is ready for the next dozing cycle.

Auto Pitch

The auto pitch feature controls the pitch of the blade according to the segment of the dozing cycle. The
operator changes segments sequentially by using the mode select switch on the blade control handle.
The auto pitch feature will maintain different settings of pitch for the "load", "carry" and "spread"
portions of the dozing cycle. These settings can be set to the factory default values or customized by the
operator. Within the topic "Blade Settings", see the information about "Setting The Setpoints For Pitch".
The settings can be stored with the operator profile. A machine that has been configured as a single tilt
machine cannot make effective use of the auto pitch feature. Auto pitch is available on machines that are
equipped with dual tilt and operating in the single tilt mode.

Note: The auto pitch will not operate properly below an engine rpm of 1000.

The operations of the auto pitch are included in the following list:

1. "Activate"

a. In order to arm the "ABA", press the "ABA" rocker switch below the advisor screen. The
Advisor will display the following warning, "ABA PITCH NOT RESET" and "NOT
RESET" in the top of the Advisor screen. At this time, the mode is armed but the mode is
not activated. The position of the blade must be initialized in order to activate the auto pitch
feature.

2. "Initialize"

a. Press the mode select switch on the blade control handle. The blade will return to the most
rearward position of pitch (zero pitch). Then, the blade will extend to the "load" position.
The Advisor will change to "READY TO CARRY". The blade is in the "load" position,
unless the machine is in the reverse gear. The mode will change to "ready to return" if the
machine was in the reverse gear.

3. "Load"

a. The Advisor should show "READY TO CARRY". The operator proceeds to load the blade
adequately with full control over all motions of the blade. The "auto pitch" feature does not
perform any actions during the "Load" segment of the dozing cycle. At the end of the
"Load" segment, the operator will press the mode select switch. The Advisor will change to
read "CARRY" and the preset pitch of the blade will move to the pitch for "carry".

4. "Carry"

a. Now, the operator will carry the load for the "spread" segment to the spread area.

5. "Spread"

a. During the "spread" segment, the ABA function will extend the tilt cylinders to the preset
pitch for "spread". Unless the operator changes into the "Return" segment by shifting into
the reverse gear, the blade pitch will increase until the blade reaches the preset position of
pitch forward. The auto pitch will only pitch the blade forward when the machine is in the
"spread" mode. The operator can pitch the blade rearward in order to slow the rate of blade
pitch. Auto pitch will continue to pitch the blade forward after the operator releases the
blade control handle. See "Operator Override Of The Automated Blade Assist Function".
During normal operations, the load will be spread. Then, the operator will shift into the
reverse gear. The Advisor will read "RESETTING" and auto pitch will begin to reset to the
load position.

6. "Return"

a. The blade pitch will move rearward to the zero pitch position during the "Return" cycle.
Then, the blade pitch will move forward to the pitch position for "Load" operations. The
Advisor will read "RESETTING " when the blade is in a transition. The Advisor will read

"RETURN" after the blade has reset. This operation is in preparation for the next pass. The
machine will change to the "ready to carry" mode, if the operator is in the "return" segment
and shifts to the forward gear. Now, the machine is ready for the "load" segment.

If the operator interrupts the blade resetting mode, the mode will change to "NOT RESET".
The blade will reset again if the mode select switch is pressed again. Reset the blade after
each cycle in order to maintain the accuracy of the auto pitch function. .

Conditions That Cause Inaccuracies In The Auto Pitch

The following list contains examples of conditions that can cause inaccuracies in the operation of the
auto pitch:

z The operator activates the auto pitch function and the operator deactivates the auto pitch function
quickly.

z The pump efficiency has degraded.

z The pump has not been calibrated correctly.

z Failure of the seal in the tilt cylinders

z Low idle speed

z A significant hydraulic oil leak

z The operator does not allow the system to reset properly.

Auto Spread Function

Note: This function applies to machines equipped with Position Sensing Cylinder installed.

The auto spread function is designed in order to control the height of the blade during the spread/dump
segment of the dozing cycle. The auto spread function will raise the blade in order to spread the carried
load. The spread rate will vary according to the spread rate that was selected. The spread rate will also
vary according to the speed of the track. The operator will choose the spread rate from a menu. The rate
can be stored with the operator profile. The auto spread feature is automatically activated by the ABA,
when the ABA changes to the spread mode. The auto spread feature will continue to raise the blade even
though the tractor speed drops to zero. The operator can make manual height adjustments that will
override the auto spread feature. The auto spread feature will resume after the manual correction is
complete.

The auto spread function does not lower the blade. The auto spread function will compensate for the
pitching of the blade. The auto pitch will affect the height of the blade during the auto spread operation.
While the pitch of the blade is being changed, the auto pitch function changes the height of the cutting
edge. The corrections will be added to the adjustments of the auto spread feature.

Note: The pitch forward movement of the blade will lower the height of the blade cutting edge. If the
blade is loaded fully or the blade is loaded with heavy material, the auto spread function may not
function properly. The auto spread function may not be able to raise the blade in time in order to

https://198.101.110.37:8443/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisw... 2/9/2009
D10T Track-Type Tractor RJG00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY C27 Engine(S... Page 10 of 24

compensate for the change in the height of the blade cutting edge. This condition is caused by the
forward pitching of the blade. In this situation, the operator must tilt the blade manually in order to
remove some of the material from the blade.

Auto Return Function

Note: This function applies to machines equipped with Position Sensing Cylinder installed.

The auto return function is intended to raise the blade during the return portion of the dozing cycle. This
will avoid back dragging of the blade. The height of the blade is set by the operator and the information
can be stored within the operator profile.

The auto return feature is activated by pressing the mode select switch on the blade control handle or the
auto return feature is activated by shifting into reverse. The auto return does not affect the pitch of the
blade. The auto return controls the height of the blade only. The auto return will bring the blade to full
height first. After the auto pitch feature has reset the blade pitch, the auto return feature will return the
blade to a preset height. The return height setpoint is a factory default or the operator may set the return
height setpoint by using the Advisor. This custom setting may be stored in a custom profile. The auto
return feature will stop once the target position is reached. Then, the ABA will cycle to the "Return"
mode. The blade will stop, if the operator makes a manual change to the height of the blade during the
automatic operation. The cycle may be resumed by pressing the mode select switch.

Operator Override Of The Automated Blade Assist Function

The operator override is a feature of the implement system that overrides the ABA during certain
conditions. Any manual control of the blade will take priority over the ABA functions. If the operator
performs manual movement of the blade, the following effects will occur to the feature that is active:

Auto Pitch Feature Override - If the operator manually adjusts the angle of pitch, the Auto Pitch
Feature should hold any automatic adjustment of the blade pitch unless the machine is in the "spread"
mode. The auto pitch feature will hold the blade pitch until a different mode has been selected by using
the mode select switch or shifting to another gear. However, the auto pitch feature will calculate the
pitch position of the blade in order to position the tilt cylinders correctly for the next segment. If the
machine is in the "spread" mode, the auto pitch feature will continue to pitch the blade to the target pitch
position. The pitching of the blade will be performed immediately after the operator completes the
adjustments in pitch. If the operator makes a correction to the tilt, the auto pitch feature should delay the
adjustments to the blade pitch. When the operator stops the correction to the tilt, the auto pitch feature
will finish the adjustments to the blade pitch.

Auto Return Feature Override - If the operator makes an adjustment to the height of the blade within
the first second of initiating the "Resetting", the ABA will continue to control the blade. The ABA will
stop controlling the height of the blade when the operator continues to adjust the height of the blade
beyond one second. The Auto Return Function will be suspended for the rest of the return cycle.

Blade Float

The blade float is an operating mode. The blade is allowed to "float" rather than being controlled by the
hydraulics. The following instructions will assist in the operation of the blade float function:

To activate "FLOAT", push the joystick forward past the joystick detent and release the joystick and
allow it to return to the center. The "FLOAT" indicator in the instrument cluster will now be lit and the
blade will be in "FLOAT".

"FLOAT" is disabled by moving the handle to raise or lower the blade. The feature for "Blade Float" can
be turned off in Advisor in the setup area. Refer to table 2.

1. The float feature may be disabled and system operations will return to the default operation if any
of the following events occur:

a. The blade control handle is moved in order to raise or lower the blade.

b. Power to the implement control is turned off.

c. A calibration procedure or a diagnostic test is started.

d. A failure which caused the system to be disabled

e. The actuation of the implement lockout switch

f. Advisor blade float setting is changed to "Disabled".

g. Limp Home mode is engaged.

2. The float feature will be overridden temporarily, if a request is made for ripper functions. The
blade will stop at the current height, if a request is made for ripper functions. The blade operation
will return to float after the ripper function has been performed.

If the ABA is armed, the float feature will override the ABA. The status of the ABA will change to
being armed and the ABA will not be active. The ABA will remain in the "armed" state. The ABA is not
"active" when the blade float function is not "active".

Note: If the pilot pressure is low or the handle required calibration, "Float" may not function properly.

Auto Carry Function

During a typical dozing cycle, an operator must make constant adjustments to the height of the dozer
blade in order to maintain the optimum blade load. The peak operating efficiency is achieved near the
maximum tractive effort for the machine. A change in the operating condition will reduce the
capabilities of the machine to maintain an optimum efficiency. Auto carry will provide the operator with
a semi-automatic method of controlling the blade load. Auto carry can improve productivity and auto
carry can reduce the slip on a Track-Type Tractor during the carry segment of a typical dozing cycle.

System".

Setting The Spread Rate

The configuration for the spread rate is used to adjust the ratio of "blade raise" and "blade pitch". The
operator will configure the setpoint for the spread rate. The setpoint is used in order to regulate the
spread rate of the material.

The configuration for the spread rate is accessed by the following steps.

1. Select "Settings" on the Advisor.

2. Select the Implement ECM

3. Select Spread Rate.

4. Press the left or right arrow keys in order to change the spread rate.

Setting The Blade Response

The response configuration of the blade is used in order to select the speed of blade movement. The
setpoint for the blade response will allow the operator to choose the speed of the blade. The setpoint is
also used whenever the blade control handle is moved. There are three options for this setpoint. The
three options are listed: standard, fine and fast.

Refer to 2 for configuring the desired blade response.

Note: In order for the configuration for the blade response to function correctly, the blade raise solenoid
and blade lower solenoid valves must be within proper calibration.

Setting The Setpoints For The Auto Blade Pitch

The Auto Blade Pitch settings will allow the operator to change the setpoints for the following AUTO
pitch functions: "load", "carry" and "spread". The position of the blade pitch must be reset in order to
change the setpoints. The setpoints will not change unless the position of the blade pitch has just been
reset.

To reset the blade pitch, run the engine at high idle and ensure that the implement lockout switch is in
the UNLOCKED position. Turn on AUTO pitch and follow the prompts in the message center. When
the "READY TO CARRY" message appears, blade pitch has been reset.

After an option is selected, A new corresponding message with a value of percentage about the pitch
will be shown. A 0 value corresponds to fully retracted tilt cylinders. A 100 value corresponds to fully
extended tilt cylinders. At this point, the operator adjusts the blade pitch to the desired position by using
the pitch back switch and the pitch forward switch on the blade control handle. When the blade is at the
desired position, the operator uses the "OK" key to accept the new setpoint. The Advisor will give a
momentary message about the setpoint that is being changed and then return to the normal display.

This process of selecting an option and then adjusting the pitch can be similarly repeated for the second

https://198.101.110.37:8443/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisw... 2/9/2009

and third options. These options are listed:

z "1:SET LOAD PITCH"

z "2:SET CARRY PITCH"

z "3:SET SPREAD PITCH"

Setting The Return Height Of The Blade

The configuration for the return height is accessed by the following steps.

1. Select "Settings" on the Advisor.

2. Select the Implement ECM

3. Select blade height.

4. Raise the blade to the desired height.

The set height function allows the operator to change the "BLADE RETURN HEIGHT" setpoint of the
AUTO pitch function. The AUTO pitch will adjust the height of the blade to the value of this setpoint
during the "RETURN" mode.

Note: The terminology "blade height" actually means the height of the cutting edge. The height of the
cutting edge can be adjusted by using the height of the blade and/or the blade pitch.

When AUTO pitch is in the ON position and the "SET HT" is selected, the following message appears
on the message center:

z "SET BLADE RET HT"

z "= 100%"

The percentage value may be different. This value is dependent on the current height of the blade. The
range of the height of the blade is from fully raised "100%" to fully lowered "-100%".

At this point, the operator uses the blade control handle in order to raise the blade or the blade control
handle is used in order to lower the blade to the desired height. As the height of the blade is changed, the
percentage value should change accordingly. When the blade is at the desired position, the operator uses
the "OK" key to accept the new value. Only a setting between 30% and 100% is allowed.

Note: If the operator tries to accept a value less than 30%, the ECM will automatically select the
minimum value of 30%. The message center will give a momentary message of the new setpoint value.
Then, the message center will return to the normal message.

Ripper Function
The implement ECM controls all movement of the ripper. The operator uses the ripper control handle to

https://198.101.110.37:8443/sisweb/sisweb/techdoc/techdoc_print_page.jsp?returnurl=/sisw... 2/9/2009

request height and tilt movement of the ripper. The related sensors and switches within the ripper control
handle are input into the ECM. The ECM responds to each input by adjusting the current that is sent to
the related pilot solenoid valves. Pilot solenoid valves perform the following functions: raise, lower,
shank in and shank out functions. These solenoid valves are On/OFF valves. The solenoid valves allow
the flow of pilot oil which causes movement of the ripper.

An implement lockout solenoid is used in order to deactivate the implement hydraulic system. The
implement lockout solenoid is energized during normal machine operation. When the operator moves
the implement lockout switch into the LOCKED position, the implement lockout solenoid is de-
energized and the solenoid blocks supply oil to the implement manifold. The hydraulic lockout LED on
the instrument cluster will illuminate. No pilot pressure will be available for initiating movement of the
blade or the ripper. This switch should be in the LOCKED position before any of the following
conditions exist:

z The operator exits the machine.

z The machine is being serviced.

z The machine is left unattended.

Note: The implement lockout solenoid is temporarily de-energized if the throttle switch is in the low
idle position and no command is being requested. The ECM will energize the lockout solenoid
automatically, if the implement lockout switch is in the NOT LOCKED position and the throttle switch
is in the high idle position.

The pin puller is not controlled by the ECM. The pin puller will function regardless of the implement
lockout solenoid. ET is used to view the status of the rear attachment. The possible selections are as
follows:

z Dual Axis Ripper

z Single Axis Ripper

z Towed Scraper

z NOT INSTALLED

For more information, see Troubleshooting, RENR8056, "Configuration".

Ripper Auto Stow Function

An additional function for the ripper is the auto stow function. The auto stow function is an aid to the
operator. The auto stow function will raise the ripper automatically. The auto stow function is also
designed to retract or extend the ripper. The operator can press the ripper auto stow switch, rather than
holding the ripper lift control lever in the RAISE position. The ECM will raise the ripper automatically.
The ripper auto stow function allows the operator to perform other tasks while the ripper is
automatically stowed. The operator can configure the auto stow function to raise the ripper. The operator
can configure the auto stow function so that the shank can be raised and the shank can retract or extend.
refer to table 2. The auto stow configuration can be stored in an operator profile.

Note: The auto stow function will be delayed if the blade is manually adjusted. This adjustment may
cause incomplete stowing of the ripper.

Other Features
Controls Active Test

The controls active test is designed to prevent any unexpected movement of the implements, after the
key start switch is turned to the ON position. The controls active test is one of the first tasks that is
executed by the implement ECM. The test will start when the following conditions have been met:

z Transition of the key start switch from the OFF to the ON position

z Engine cranking

z The implement lockout switch is changed from being LOCKED to being NOT LOCKED.

z A calibration or a diagnostic test that used a control device has been completed.

The ECM will test the following items during the controls active test: blade control handle and ripper
control handle. A function of the blade control handle or the ripper control handle that fails the controls
active test will be disabled.

The components that are tested during the controls active test are listed:

z Sensor (blade control raise/lower)

z Sensor (blade control tilt)

z Thumb rocker switch (pitch control)

z Trigger Switch (single/dual tilt)

z Sensor (ripper raise/lower)

z Sensor (ripper shank in/out lever)

z Switch (ripper auto stow function)

The possible causes for failing the controls active test are listed:

z The blade control handle is not in the HOLD position.

z The ripper control handle is not in the HOLD position.

Controls Active Test Override

The feature of controls active test override is provided as an aid to the service person. The service
person uses this feature to open the radiator guard hydraulically. The controls active test override will

disable the controls active test. The controls active test override allows the implements to be active
during engine cranking. You should use caution when you use the controls active test override. The
implements are always active. The controls active test override is activated by installing the crank
without inject plug in the engine harness.

The crank without inject feature provides a means of cranking the engine without starting the engine. A
harness plug is located close to the engine ECM. The harness plug is changed in order to enable this
feature. The crank without inject plug is read only when the key is in the ON position. The engine ECM
sends a signal to the implement ECM while the engine is being cranked. The signal is telling the
implement ECM that the engine is cranking without injecting fuel. The implement ECM will override
the controls active test and the ECM will allow activation of the electro-hydraulic system, when the
implement ECM reads this status. This status can be viewed on the Caterpillar Electronic Technician
(ET).

Information about the engine cranking without injecting fuel is available in System Operation and
Testing and Adjusting Engines For Caterpillar Built Machines for the C27 Engine.

Implement Lockout

The feature of implement lockout is used to deactivate the pilot supply of the implement system. The
implement lockout solenoid is de-energized when the operator places the implement lockout switch in
the LOCKED position. This solenoid valve blocks supply oil to the implement manifold. No pilot
pressure will be available for initiating movement of the blade or the ripper. This switch should be in the
LOCKED position when the following conditions exist:

z The operator is exiting the machine.

z The machine is being serviced.

z The machine is left unattended.

Note: The implement lockout solenoid is temporarily deactivated if the throttle position switch is at low
idle. The ECM will automatically activate the lockout solenoid if the following conditions are present:
The implement lockout switch is not locked. and The throttle position switch is at high idle.

The solenoid is energized during normal machine operation. The pin puller assembly will operate
regardless of the implement lockout feature.

Dead Engine Lower

Lowering the implement with the engine OFF is a feature that will allow the implements to be lowered,
when the engine is not in operation and the key start switch is in the ON position. The ECM provides
electrical power for the sensors, switches and solenoid valves. With the key start switch in the ON and
the implement lockout switch in UNLOCKED position, the implements can be lowered by moving the
blade control handle or the ripper control handle into the LOWER position. The implement will then
lower until the implement is at rest.

Note: With the engine off and the key start switch in the OFF position, all solenoid valves are de-
energized. This protects against downward drift when the implements are left in a raised position.

Limp Home Mode

The "Limp Home Mode" allows the operator to move the implements if a failure occurs in order to
move the machine to an area for service. The limp home mode will allow the movement of all
implements if the system is capable of the movement. The mode is

Note: The feature is typically used when a control handle fails. The failure of an implement solenoid
may cause an implement to move unexpectedly. For example, the blade will lower when the limp home
mode is activated and the blade lower solenoid valve is shorted to the + battery. This is due to limp
home mode ignoring diagnostics

Follow the following steps in order to change the auto stow configuration:

1. From the "Home" menu, scroll to "Service" and press the "OK" button on the keypad.

2. Select "Limp Home" from the menu items.

3. Select the desired Limp Home response.

The operator can scroll through each option by using the arrow keys. The "OK" key is pressed in order
to select the option. The Advisor menu will change to one of the following examples, after the option
has been selected:

The disconnection of a failed component may be necessary in order to use the "Limp Home Mode", if
the failed component prevents the use of this mode.

The implements will move in small increments when the arrow key for the desired direction is pressed.
The corresponding solenoid will respond to the arrow key with a predetermined pulse time. The
movement of the implement will be affected by the speed of the engine. The controls of the implement
are not used for the limp home mode. The "OK" key is pressed after the limp home mode is no longer
needed. The operation of the "Limp Home Mode" will take priority over all other functions. A
diagnostic code will not disable the "Limp Home Mode". All other implement functions will be

available through normal operations of the blade control handle or ripper control handle.

Towed Scraper Application

Note: The wiring and the hydraulic configuration for this option are not supplied.

The towed scraper application provides a modified ripper hydraulic control system in order to operate
the towed scraper bowl. The configuration is supported in the electronic software. The configuration
requires a minor modification of the electrical system in order to make use of the configuration.

The hydraulic system should be configured by the customer in order to provide the bowl raise/lower
function on the thumb lever of the ripper control. The hydraulics should be configured to provide the
bowl ejector in/out function on the finger lever of the ripper control. The configuration would use the
ports of the ripper raise/lower function in order to provide the primary hydraulic power to the scraper
bowl. In addition, this configuration would use the driver of the auxiliary solenoid in order to control an
additional electrohydraulic solenoid. The electrohydraulic solenoid will switch the bowl raise/lower
function to the bowl ejector in/out function.

During the command for the finger lever from the ripper control, the implement electronic control will
energize a driver for an auxiliary solenoid. The electrical connector for the auxiliary solenoid driver is
not connected to the machine wiring. The customer must wire the auxiliary solenoid. The signal to the
solenoid is wired to pin 61 on the connector "J1" on the implement ECM.

The wiring and the hydraulic configuration for the towed scraper application are not supplied because of
the wide range of possible hydraulic configurations. Give careful consideration when you adapt the
scraper bowl in order to work with the towed scraper application. The following considerations should
be made:

z The driver for the auxiliary solenoid has normal Caterpillar diagnostics. The diagnostics depend
on using a specific type of coil for the solenoid valve. The diagnostics have been tested for a 145-
1144 Coil and a 156-6173 Coil. Another coil may cause a false diagnostic. A coil with a resistance
between 7 ohms and 9 ohms is likely to function with the diagnostics. The electrical diagnostics
perform the following checks: open circuits, short circuit to ground and short circuit to the battery.

z The driver of the solenoid will supply a maximum of 1 amp when this solenoid is on. The
auxiliary solenoid driver is not adjustable.

z The requirements of the hydraulic flow for the scraper bowl must be carefully considered. Most
solenoid valves will only supply pilot pressure to another valve that will do the actual splitting of
the flow.

Time delays have been included in the configuration of the towed scraper application in order to
minimize pressure spikes in the hydraulic system. When the finger tip lever is activated, the auxiliary
solenoid will be activated for 160 ms before the ripper raise solenoid. When the finger tip lever is
released, the pressure compensation override solenoid will shut off. Then, the ripper raise solenoid and
the auxiliary solenoid will shut off 60 ms later.

In the configuration of the towed scraper application, the calibrations of the ripper solenoid are disabled
and the calibrations are not required. The ripper shank in solenoid and the ripper shank out solenoid are
disabled and the diagnostic of the ripper auto stow switch is disabled. All of the other diagnostics
operate normally in this configuration.

The towed scraper application is selected within the ET Configuration Screen. Select the "Towed
Scraper" application within the configuration of the "Rear Attachment Installation Status". After the
selection has been made, the power must be cycled in the implement control in order to enable the towed
scraper application in the software.

Quick Drop Function

The Quick Drop is a feature that allows the dozer blade to be quickly lowered to the ground. While the
dozer blade is in the Quick Drop mode, the hydraulic fluid flowing from the rod end of the lift cylinders
is connected back to the head end adding to the flow provided by the hydraulic pump. This is known as
hydraulic regeneration. While in this mode the lift cylinders are extended as quickly as possible. This is
done to provide more down pressure than is available when the cylinders are in a regenerative state.

The Blade Quick Drop function will be accomplished by pushing the Blade Control Handle in the
forward direction to a point just prior to the Blade Float detent position. The operator must maintain this
handle position in order to hold the Quick Drop function active. Tilting the blade control handle in the
right or left directions, while maintaining the fore/aft positioning of the handle will allow Blade Tilting
simultaneously with the Quick Drop function. This allows the operator to make Blade Tilt corrections
while the Quick Drop feature is active. Moving the blade control handle in the fore/aft direction out of
the Quick Drop position will result in a deactivation of the function.

When the blade control lever is moved to a position that is more than 75 percent of the full lever travel
in the LOWER position and the blade is suspended above the ground, the blade will drop quickly.
During the quick-drop of the blade, the weight of the blade and gravity forces oil from the rod end of the
lift cylinders. This will cause the quick-drop valve to activate.

Blade Float Function

The blade float function is activated in the hydraulic system by moving the raise/lower valve stem
beyond the full lower. This configures the hydraulic system so that the blade is subject to gravity. The
blade can move up and the blade can move down. The blade will follow the ground line. To operate the
float, the blade control handle must be pushed to the full lower position. Release the blade control
handle. The blade will now be in the float function. Move the blade control handle to the raise position

in order to leave the float mode. The implement ECM will perform the command. The blade is removed
from the float mode. The blade will not leave the float mode if the blade control handle is moved to the
lower or the tilt positions. To re-enter the float mode, simply push the blade control handle to the full
lower position.

The float mode may be Enabled or Disabled by the Advisor.

The float mode is temporarily disabled if a ripper function is requested. The configuration of the
hydraulic system requires the float mode to be disabled.
