Guideline: Syringe Selectio

WARNING: This guideline must only be used in connection with the use of
the Med+Safe® and Prac+Safe® software programs for educational and
training purposes and must not be used for any other purpose. In
particular, you must not use this guideline in connection with real practice
or real patients. Real syringe selection requirements at various facilities
may vary from any requirements mentioned in this guideline.

the applicable IntelliLearn software licence. IntelliLearn Pty Ltd, IntelliLearn

employees and agents will not be liable for any outcome that may arise
from use of this guideline with real patients or for any other unauthorised
purpose.

The table below shows the most appropriate syringe to select when using the
Med+Safe® and Prac+Safe® software. Please scroll to the next page for important
information about how this relates to actual clinical practice

Syringe Selection when using Med+Safe® & Prac+Safe®

Volume to Administer Syringe to Select
Less than 1.05mL 1 mL syringe
• 1mL dose should be given in a 1mL syringe
• 1.04mL dose should be given in a 1mL syringe as 1mL

Greater than (or equal to) 1.05mL and less than 3.05mL 3 mL syringe
• 3mL dose should be given in a 3mL syringe
• 3.03mL dose should be given in a 3mL syringe as 3mL

Greater than (or equal to) 3.05 mL and less than 5.05mL 5 mL syringe
• 5mL dose should be given in a 5mL syringe
• 3.9mL dose should be given in a 5mL syringe
Any volume of insulin The INSULIN syringe
measured in UNITS

Note: In the above examples you will note that a dose of 1.04mL would be given as 1mL in a 1mL syringe. The
reason for this relates to accuracy of drawing up that is possible when using different simulated syringes in
Med+Safe® and Prac+Safe®. In actual clinical practice the administration of this dose may be different

Important Notes about Syringe Selection in actual clinical practice:

• Generally, you should try and choose the smallest syringe for the dose that needs
to be administered
• In actual clinical practice you may (in some instances depending on a range of
factors) draw a larger initial volume than is required to administer and then discard
the excess volume from the syringe. This often means that you may select a slightly
larger syringe than is required to allow for this extra volume. For example, if the
correct nal volume to administer is 1mL you may choose a 2mL syringe to allow
you to draw up a little extra volume to then discard as per the facility’s policy.
However, for the sake of simplicity in Med+Safe® and Prac+Safe® this
phenomena is disregarded. Please simply use the table above to choose the
most appropriately sized syringe.
