Build your own water

filtration
Fresh water is essential for life. However, it sometimes contains some insoluble

substances (impurities) that need to be removed before we use it. Water filtration is the

process used to remove these insoluble substances. How do we do that?

Materials:

Dirty water
1 plastic bottle
Cotton
Gravel
Pebbles
• Sand
Charcoal
Scissors

Steps:

Cut an empty bottle into half

Place the bottle upside down, and put 8-10 pieces of cotton
Add a layer of gravel on top of the cotton
Add a layer of sand on top of the gravel
Add a layer of charcoal on top of the sand
Add a layer of pebbles on top of the charcoal
• Add a layer of sand on top of the pebbles
Add 8-10 pieces of cotton on top of the sand
Slowly pour the dirty water
Wait for the water to pass through
Observe the appearance and the smell of the filtered water and compare it to the original
dirty water
