1.
Man: No, I'm not up for it, not tonight, anyway. How about going to a quiet
place for a change, you know, no loud music, crowds and that sort of
thing….. Well, there's this new place on Newbury Street. I hear it's
great; they have a live band which plays nice soft music. We can talk
over a light meal, I've heard the food is excellent… What?… You want
to go dancing? No problem. The place has got a small dance floor in
front of the stage. What do you say?

2.
Len: What? I can't believe you'd do such a thing!
Sharon: It's not that bad, as long as you're not scared of heights.
Len: But isn't it dangerous?
Sharon: Not really, you've got all the safety equipment.
Len: And, how do you get up again after you've jumped?
Sharon: There's people on the bridge, they pull you back up again. It's easy.
Len: Easy? You must be joking!

3.
Travel Agent: We have this trip, it's on special offer.
Tom: Round the World, eh? I don't think I can afford that.
Travel Agent: It's half price.
Tom: Really? That's not too bad then.
Travel Agent: And just look at the places you visit; Africa, Australia, America.
Tom: They're wonderful places, I know. I've been to most of them,
you see. Does it include India? That's one country I'd love to
visit.
Travel Agent: There's a week in China, but unfortunately not India.
Tom: I see. It seems a bit of a waste of time if it doesn't include
India. Have you got anything else?

4.
Woman What shall I do about Zoe's behaviour?
Man: Is she giving you problems?
Woman: Oh yes, she's just so rude sometimes.
Man: But she used to be so shy…Why the sudden change? Is she having
problems at school?
Woman: Well, I had a word with her teachers and they said she's doing fine…
What else can I do?

Man: Do you know what I think?

Woman: What?
Man: You should stop putting so much pressure on her. I know it's difficult,
but try to make her feel at ease.
Woman: I do. I talk to her about her school…
Man: Well, that's not what she really needs after a hard day at school, is it?
Let her do what she wants sometimes, even encourage her to go out
more.
Woman: You're right, I do shout at her a lot about her homework.

Kelly: So, how was it?
Ed: The exchange trip? Pretty good actually. Jean-Paul was really nice. He
was a bit quiet in the beginning.
Kelly: Probably nervous about his English.
Ed: That's what I thought. But after he relaxed a bit, we got on really well
together.
Kelly: And his family?
Ed: They were nice. They only spoke French so I improved a lot while I was
there. Jean-Paul's dad is a fantastic cook, we ate like kings every day.
Kelly: Wow! Did you get to see much of Paris?
Ed: Yeah. I was really lucky. Jean-Paul's house is right in the centre. We
went out every day. He took me to Notre Dame, the Champs-Elysees,
the Eiffel Tower, everything.
Kelly: I'd love to go up the Eiffel Tower.
Ed: I must say the view from the top is incredible. I've got some photos at
home, remind me to show you. It was a bit expensive though, and the
queues were really long.
Kelly: But worth the wait?
Ed: Definitely. But you need more than a week to see all of Paris.
Kelly: I suppose so. When's Jean-Paul coming here?
Ed: In the summer. I can't wait to show him London. There are some places
he wants to go that I've never been to before.
Kelly: Well, they're mainly for tourists, aren't they?
Ed: Ha, ha. I'll be a tourist in my own country.
Kelly: Weird. Can I come along one day?
Ed: Sure. But you can't practise your French on Jean-Paul. He'll be here to
learn English.
Kelly: OK.

Steven: Now it's that time again on Spook Zone, when we invite one of our
listeners to the studio to tell us about their spooky brushes with the
supernatural. Here's Fay Bullock with her story from the dark side.
Fay: Hello.
Steven: So, Fay, you grew up in the most haunted place in Britain.
Fay: That's right. Kent is known for it's ghostly stories. Who hasn't heard the
one about Hever castle and the ghost of Anne Boleyn?
Steven: Right. Now tell us something about your life in Kent.
Fay: We lived in an old house in the remote countryside. The nearest town
was actually miles away. What was scary about the house was that it
was built on a Roman graveyard.
Steven: No?!
Fay: We lived in a two-storey house with a large garden. It seemed quite
normal at first. But then strange things started happening.
Steven: Like what?
Fay: Well, every night I would see a man standing at the edge of my bed.
Actually, it was more like a grey shadow than a man. At first I thought
my eyes were playing tricks on me, but that was just wishful thinking.
Steven: You must have been scared out of your wits.
Fay: I wouldn't go that far. Normally I would have been alarmed, but there
was something sad about him that made me feel more sorry than
frightened.
Steven: So you're telling me that all that time you lived there you were never
afraid?
Fay: No, something happened once which really freaked me out. I was home
alone when I heard heavy footsteps thundering up the stairs. They
stopped right outside my room. I kept staring at the door. I knew that my
family weren't coming home so soon so, I was hoping that whatever
was there wouldn't come in. Then I remembered that ghosts don't need
to open doors; they can just walk right through them. The room grew
cold and dark all of a sudden. I could feel something evil around me.
Steven: What happened then?
Fay: This black hooded figure appeared out of nowhere.
Steven: Ah! Did you see its face?
Fay: No, I couldn't. Anyway, as it drew closer, I heard the front door open
and shut. It was my mum. The figure just vanished.
Steven: Well, that was one spooky story… (fade out)

Int: Hi Jo, I hope I didn't keep you waiting too long.
Jo: Not at all.
Int: Just a minute. I have your CV here somewhere… Ah, here it is. So, tell
me Jo, why did you choose a career in Graphic Design?
Jo: Well, Art was definitely the most interesting A-level I did. I found
Geography a bit boring and Maths was very difficult. So, it was a natural
decision to go for a degree in graphic design.
Int: I see. And was Sheffield your first choice?
Jo: Yes, it was. I was very pleased to get a place.
Int: And you decided to continue your studies?
Jo: Yes, I wasn't sure what Masters to do at first, but when I completed the
course, I was pleased I had chosen History of Art.
Int: OK. And your first job was as a sales assistant.
Jo: That's right, I worked in a little shop while I was studying. It was good
experience. I learned a lot about decoration and we got to take home
any cakes that were left over.
Int: How nice. Then, you got your first graphic design job.
Jo: Yes, but unfortunately that didn't last long. Designing webpages is a
difficult business these days. There is a lot of competition.
Int: You can say that again.
Jo: I was lucky to find another graphic design job straightaway.
Int: And that's where you're working now. What sort of magazine is it?
Jo: It's a lifestyle magazine, but it's a small company and, well, to be honest
with you, I'm looking for something more challenging.
Int: That's good. I'm pleased to see that you enjoy travelling. You see, we're
thinking of expanding abroad.
Jo: Aha.
Int: And it seems like you're quite an active person. We have a gym on the
top floor. But unfortunately no ski slopes, so I'm afraid snow-boarding
competitions are out of the question.
Jo: Ha, ha, that's not a problem.
Int: Now. Let me tell you about the company and then you can ask any
questions you… (fade out)

Speaker 1 (woman):
We spent nearly three months in the desert making the film. When I first had the
idea for this film I wanted it to be dramatic but romantic at the same time. The
desert was the perfect choice, although the heat made it difficult at times.
Sometimes I felt bad because I had to order people on the set to run around and
do things but, that was only because I wanted to finish as quickly as possible.

Speaker 2 (man):
Making the film was a fascinating experience for me. It was hard work and I was
exhausted after some of the scenes, especially with all those heavy clothes I had
to wear. But I have to say, I learned a lot. The crew were very helpful and patient
which made my job easier. Overall, I think it was one of my best performances.
Some people say that I could win an award. We'll just have to wait and see!

Speaker 3 (man):
I don't know what I was thinking about when I accepted the job. I mean, have you
ever tried to keep someone looking good all day in the dry heat of the desert? It's
impossible! The worst thing was the wind. As soon as I had finished someone,
Whoosh! Their faces would be covered in sand. I should have guessed what it
would be like, I suppose. Next time, I'll certainly be a bit more careful about which
films I choose to work on.

Speaker 4 (man):
The film had many dramatic scenes which made my job a lot easier. All I had to
do was find a powerful tune which would be present throughout the film. I wanted
people to immediately think of the film whenever they heard it. I chose something
exotic because most of the film is set in the desert. I did a lot of research,
listening to other soundtracks from similar films and I think it worked well. It's a
quality film and it should be quite successful.
