Discomfort usually begins several hours after the procedure, as the local anesthesia wears off. To minimize discomfort please 60 the following: + Take up to 800mg of Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin), or up to (4) 200mg Ibuprofen tablets, every 8hours. Do not exceed this, ‘amount, ast is the maximum recommended daily dose. Ibuprofen works best ifs taken before the numbness wearsoff. + Take any prescristion pain relievers provided as directed. These medications ‘may cause nausea or vomiting, 50 be sure to take them with food and a ful glass of water. after several days, with peak swelling occurring 48 hours after surgery. To minimize swelling, be sure to do the following: + Apply an ice pack to the outside of the face immediately following surgery for 15, minute intervals (15 mins. on, 15 mins. off) for the frst 24 hours. + When lying down, keep your head elevated + Any unusual or large swelling or marked rise in temperature should be reported to our office immediately ‘You can expect minor bleeding or oozing from the surgery site for the frst 24 hours following surgery. Its also important to maintain a diet with normal calorie intake levels that is high in protein, minerals, and vitamins to support healing. ‘When selecting appropriate foods, see the included Ist of food suggestions and remember the following: ‘+ Soft, cool foods that require litle to no chewing are tolerated best immediately lowing surgery. + Avoid any foods or liquids that are hot in temperature onthe frst day. This may stimulate bleeding + Supplements such as Carnation Instant Breakfast and Ensure provide excellent nutrition and are highly recommended during the fist week + You may place foods in a blender to reduce them toa soft consistency + Drink plenty of Fluids. + Avoid foods that are erunchy, spicy, oF hight aig (such as tomato sauce. After leaving the office, relax as much as possible for the rest of the day. If oral or intravenous sedation was utilized, you are prohibited from driving a vehicle that day. Avotd strenuous activity for the next few days, as this may stimulate increased bleeding. Take it easy and let your body begin the ling process. As always, let common sense itis extremely important that you do not smoke ‘during the post-surgical period. Wound healing be delayed. Moreover, the success of your periodontal treatment will be compromised. Chewing um: Absolutely not! Alcohol Avoid all alcoho! until after your one-week post operative visit. Antibioties: If you have been prescribed an antibiot rote the following: + Itigimperative that you use the entire prescription. + Ifyou have any problems with the antibiotic hives, itching, rash, diarrhea, etc- please discontinue the medication and contact our office. + For women, antibiotics may reduce the efficacy of some birth control medications. Alternative birth control methods should be used while taking antibiotics. Oral Hygiene: {tis important that you maintain your mouth in as clean a state as possible during the healing phase to keep the overall bacteria levels at a minimum. This will expedite your healing process. + So, continue to brush and floss all untreated teeth as usual
