Experiment: Puzzling Powders

Background
Last week, while your teacher was cleaning out the supply cupboard, they came across an unlabeled jar of white powder. Your teacher
knows that the following substances should have been stored in the cupboard: icing sugar, plaster of Paris, baking powder, corn
flour and table salt. You have therefore been tasked with helping to identify the powder so that your teacher can confidently
relabel the powder and use it in future.

Aims
To investigate the chemical and physical changes occurring when a number of white powders are mixed with water, iodine solution and
vinegar and to use your results to deduce the identity of a mystery white powder.
 
Results
You need to create a table with a title to record your observations. Using the skills and activities we have already
done to guide you. You will be assessed on the quality of your table. Refer to the rubric to make sure you include
the key features of a table. Make sure you are using the table tools in Microsoft Word.
Discussion
Justify: Explain why you needed to add a similar quantity of white powder to each well

To keep mixtures similar so that we can get consistent results and answers.

Analyse: Which of the white powders changed chemically when mixed with water?

Talcum powder had the most significant reaction when combined with water

vinegar?
We didn’t get up to vinegar.

Generalise: What evidence did you observe that a chemical change occurred when the white powders were
mixed with iodine solution?
The powders had Vast Colour changes when being mixed with iodine.

Deduce: Identify the mystery powder you were given. Use your results to support your answer.
Talcum powder was very similar to the mystery powder because they both had, similar reactions to
water, iodine, looked similar under a microscope and had similar texture.
Conclusion

Conclude: Write a concluding statement that addresses the aims of the experiment.
To conclude this experiment, we were able to figure out what powder the mystery powder is talcum
powder. The aim of this experiment was to find out what the mystery powder was. all the
experiments that we were able to preform suggest that the mystery powder is talcum powder, they
didn’t combine when added to water, changed the same colour with iodine(black), looked the same
under I microscope(smooth and fine), and felt the same when mixed with a spoon(smooth and not
stickey).
