Introduction to Analogue Electronics and Basic Communication Systems

Tutorial 3.1

1. Define the following terms with respect to the frequency response of a circuit:
i. Bandwidth
ii. Cut-off frequency

1
Show that the resonance frequency, fo, for the circuit in Fig. 3.1 is f o= and that
2 π √ LC

2. The figure below gives the current through and voltage across a circuit element in an AC
circuit. Use the information given in this figure to assist in answering questions part a and
part b.
i. Analyze the diagram given in the figure above and indicate which circuit
element would likely give you this relationship.

ii. Using the instantaneous voltage from the figure determine mathematical
the value of φ in terms of π for this circuit element.

iii. Using this element to along with a 1kΩ resistor draw the schematic of a
passive high pass filter.

iv. Given that the cutoff frequency of this filter is 160 Hz determine the value of
this circuit element.

b. Use the information given in the figures below to assist in answering questions part e,
f and g.

i. Given that the LED in the circuit above draws a current of 10mA and as
voltage drop of 1.8V across it when it lights calculate the value of R5

ii. In what configuration is this op-amp operating?

iii. The circuit above is place in a dark room and then in a lit room. Indicate
giving an explanation in which room will the LED lights?
