CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Education plays a significant role in our society. According to Malcom X

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it

today.” Education is the foundation to a kids’ future that is why it is crucial for any kid to

have a sustainable and healthy learning environment. Moreover, better quality of

education would lead to a better future that is why one of the Sustainable development

Goals of United Nation is to have better quality education for everyone. With this, having

quality education and a healthy learning environment plays a significant role on how a

student would grow and contribute to our society.

In the midst of this global pandemic, we are reflecting in real-time on how

systems undergo large- scale transformation how government, businesses, schools,

cities, and communities adapt and make fundamental changes to existing ways. One of

the most difficult obstacle communities have to deal with is how the hope of the nation or

"Pagasa ng bayan". Adopt the new normal in terms of expanding knowledge to gain

new skills and learning. The COVID-19 has resulted in schools shut all across the world.

The traditional learning language environment has been neglected to prevent wide

spread of COVID-19. As a result, education has changed dramatically, with the

distinctive rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital

platforms. Different factors that affect the student behavior are one by one exist. That

lessen improvement of learning value that students must learn.

In today's society, online learning are widely used in colleges providing easy

access to course materials, classroom discussions, and feedback to instructors. The

course materials and activities may be accessed from any computer, whether it is from

the University or from the comfort of your own home. Online learning is education that

takes place over the Internet. It is often referred to as “e- learning” among other terms.

However, online learning is just one type of “distance learning” - the umbrella term for

any learning that takes place across distance and not in a traditional classroom.

Reactions to the novel corona virus/COVID-19 have caused a great many changes to

daily life in recent days. One group particularly affected by these changes is the

students. They are facing challenges this year that have never happened before on this

scale.

COVID-19 is killing a large scale of people which causes people to panic and

become more aware of their health. One causes of this pandemic is the mental health of

everyone especially the students who switch into Electronic Learning. Big adjustments

are experiencing by the students in these days due to this “No to face to face” to lessen

the physical contact of the students to their classmates and professors. There are lot of

students having difficulty what they need in this Electronic Learning such as the stable

internet connection, laptops and mobile phones. Not all of us are capable of having the

needs in Electronic Learning because some students are working for themselves and

that gives the students issues in their mental health.

Students' ability to learn is as much affected by their interpersonal and

intrapersonal behavior as it is by their academic skills. In a classroom environment,

teachers can employ practices to manage students' day-to-day behavior. But many

parents may find behavior management challenging while adjusting to virtual or at-home

education. This can be especially difficult as many children deal with emotional

challenges like increased anxiety or stress as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Parents and caregivers of children with behavioral disorders like ADHD may also face

unique challenges during this time, American Psychological Association (2020).

In the book, “Adjunct Guide to Driving With Care” (PBT: Jessor, 1987, 1991,

1998; Jessor & Jessor, 1977) explains, Behavior system includes both problem and

conventional behavior structures. Problem behavior is defined as behavior that departs

from the social and legal norms of society and causes social control response from

external sources. In this case, there are many behavioral problems affecting their

personality and attitude in general.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Online Learning is a huge adjustment to all of the students, professors and also to

the parents who are guiding their children in their studies. It is important for the Aircraft

Maintenance Technology students to have a hands on learning especially on their

chosen course which relates to the safety of an aircraft. In related to their course, some

students may struggle when their On-the-Job training comes because of the absence of

laboratory experiences. Many students are pressured these days that will likely affect

their mental health due to shrinking of the economy of Aviation Industry. They are

overthinking of what will be their position after they graduated knowing that Aviation

Industry is in loss of employees due to COVID-19.

The importance of this study shows us how fourth year students of Philippine

State College of Aeronautics FAB Campus cope in this kind of learning style and know

how they deal with the online classes with or without affecting their attitude towards in a

new social environment. Especially, Philippine State College of Aeronautics FAB

Campus they are teaching highly technical course and most of students need to focus

without distractions. Moreover, according to Prameswari & Budiyanto (2017), “Teachers

need to create models or an effective way to learn, in addition, assist students in

understanding the development of related courses. And effective learning is directly

related to effective teaching and effective classroom management.” With this, teachers

need to make an interactive environment with a virtual setting so that the students would

learn more. That is why in this study, the researchers are exploring this idea and if it is

truly effective to the Seniors of Philippine State College of Aeronautics FAB Campus.

Overall, with the current situation of the world being in a pandemic, most schools

adjusted to online learning to follow healthy protocols. Furthermore, with these changes

happening, education is bound to be modified. Now with this study the researchers’ goal

is to find the effectiveness of this modification. Specifically, the change to Online classes

and modular activities especially, since for a student to fully learn and engage with their

lesson they need an effective learning environment.

Foreign Related Literature

Maheshwari and Thomas 2017 explained that there are various learning contexts

in which learners can learn, including face-to-face learning, distance learning, learning,

and online learning. Although the terms "online learning" and "e-learning" are sometimes

used interchangeably, there is a distinction between the two. E-learning is the process of

gaining access to web-based technology resources that can be used in or out of the

classroom. Oblinger et al. 2005 stated that Online learning is about describing the

learning “wholly online” where the learners learn outside the classroom and is

considered similar to distance learning but using online platforms.

Distance education, according to Keegan (2002), is defined as "teaching and

learning in which learning generally occurs in a distant place from teaching." In distant

education, he continues, materials and support structures are developed and prepared

by an educational organization that employs technology media to connect teacher,

student, and subject. Learner characteristics such as interest, attitude, and motivation

are other essential ideas that are being researched in the field of remote education and

will most likely be examined in the future. Instruction is more than just displaying

information; it requires an integrated fit that takes into account the topic, learner

differences, and delivery mode to be successful.

Karadeniz 2004 explained that individual variations become more prominent in

web-based education when students are primarily studying alone. With today's internet

technologies, it's easy to create a variety of designs that accommodate for individual

characteristics. Individual differences should be considered. Students' achievement

would be low primarily because the learning environment's organization would not

correspond to the organization of real life in their thinking.

10
REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES
PHILIPPINE STATE COLLEGE OF AERONAUTICS
Fernando Air Base Campus, Lipa City, Batangas

There are strong relationships between attitudes and beliefs, as well as

correlations between attitudes and behaviors, according to research. Attitudes build the

foundations of one's beliefs, which impact one's activities. According to Workman

(2005), when people have positive opinions regarding a technology, they are more likely

to employ that technology. He also claimed that people are impacted by subjective

norms, or one's sense of significant others' attitudes toward a specific technology, which

can either encourage or discourage one from utilizing it.

With the advent of remote education in campus-based institutions around the

world in recent decades, ensuring a smooth transition between face-to-face and distance

education has become a more essential management challenge for universities. The

attitude of learners toward online learning and distance education is one of the variables

influencing this transformation. Understanding their attitudes and perspectives can aid

universities and academic staff in developing and implementing appropriate online

learning models and formats to fulfill the needs of students. Many scholars have

emphasized the necessity of educational institutions researching and reporting students'

perceptions about online learning. Other researchers believe that learners' attitudes and

viewpoints toward online learning are a significant impact in their learning outcomes.

Students' positive views toward online learning, according to Lim et al. and Selim, are

crucial to their readiness and inclusion in distance learning.

Local Related Literature

Educators, trainers, and researchers have been looking into the aspects that

contribute to efficient learning management. Many circumstances, both inside and

11
REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES
PHILIPPINE STATE COLLEGE OF AERONAUTICS
Fernando Air Base Campus, Lipa City, Batangas

outside the school, might have an impact on a student's academic progress. These are

known as student factors, and they include family, school, and peer influences (Crosnoe,

Johnson & Elder, 2004). Aside from other elements, socioeconomic status is one of the

most examined and contested aspects of a student's academic achievement. The most

common argument is that a student's socioeconomic situation has an impact on their

academic achievement. Most experts believe that pupils' poor socioeconomic level has a

detrimental impact on their academic performance since their basic requirements are not

met, and as a result, they do not perform better academically. (Adams, 1996)

The rapid rise in COVID-19 cases has resulted in the shutdown of educational

institutions, including elementary and secondary schools. Students' attitudes about

education and school attendance can be influenced by their absence from the

educational environment. The goal of this study was to assess kids' attitudes and

emotions concerning school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During times of quarantines and viral outbreaks, it appears that online learning is the

only realistic option for continuing to learn from afar. This, however, appears to be based

on a faulty premise. It is important to note that online learning is only one type of

distance education. Distance education is broadly characterized as any form of learning

experience where the learner and the instructor are physically separated from each

other (not only by place but also by time). Arguably, such a dislocation is “the perfect

context for free-flowing thought that lets us move beyond the restricted confines of a

familiar social order” (Hooks, 2003). Moreover, this type of education is a way of

providing learning opportunities to every learner, whatever their circumstances might be.

This means that distance education may extend access to education through distribution

12
REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES
PHILIPPINE STATE COLLEGE OF AERONAUTICS
Fernando Air Base Campus, Lipa City, Batangas

and economies of scale (Guri-Rosenblit, 2005; Owusu-Agyeman and Amoakohene,

2020).

One may claim that the main thrust of distance education is to bring education to

those who are unreachable, under-resourced, less-privileged and inaccessible (Biana,

2013). Taken as such, distance education “reaches out to students wherever they live or

wish to study” (Guri-Rosenblit, 2005). This kind of flexibility gives students more freedom

to actively participate in learning (Guri-Rosenblit, 2005; Daniel, 2016). Students learn

even if they are separated from their instructors by space and/or time (Edge and

Loegering, 2000). In the time of COVID-19, distance learning became a necessity for

learners and educators all over the world (Ali, 2020).

The Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia are all in the same economic

and sociocultural boat, and they're all dealing with the same COVID-19 education

difficulties. However, these issues present a chance to increase our understanding of

education and adopt long-term, sustainable improvements that will improve the quality of

our educational institutions. The Philippines will require a clear set of laws and standards

based on an innovative educational framework in the future. This necessitates a

thorough and honest assessment of the country's readiness to provide learning

programs that go beyond the norm. Several aspects must be considered when the

Philippines begins on a new method of education. This encompasses instructor capacity,

the learner's circumstance and context, and the learning environment's efficiency. These

are, of course, in addition to the more obvious concerns about internet speed, material

costs, and delivery methods. Taking a step back and designing a strategy that involves

teachers, students, parents, school officials, and technology-based corporations is the

13
REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES
PHILIPPINE STATE COLLEGE OF AERONAUTICS
Fernando Air Base Campus, Lipa City, Batangas

best approach to move forward. This kind of innovative solution, based on a shared

vision, is exactly what this unusual challenge calls for (De Vera, 2020).

Synthesis

Overall, the specified studies and literature are indeed helpful and relevant to the

aim and objectives of the study which is determining the factors affecting fourth year

students adaptation towards online learning. Considering the past studies that revealed

that online learning has an effect to the students’ performance toward their online class,

and factors effecting students, is essential in a way that the researchers are being

familiarized with the relevant concepts and ideas which are crucial in formulating the

framework and the hypotheses of the study. Aside from that, this would also aid the

researchers in choosing the most appropriate research instrument or tools and adding

realizations to the past studies which can be seen from the changes that took place.

Understanding the factors affecting student is the focus of the study. This will aid the

researchers in determining the underlying benefits and advantages that it will bring to the

community, as well as the possible improvements on updates that could be applied.

These findings are of great significance in alleviating the current status and the factors

that can affect the students.

REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES
PHILIPPINE STATE COLLEGE OF AERONAUTICS
Fernando Air Base Campus, Lipa City, Batangas

The study used a quantitative research design to determine the adaptation of the

Fourth Year students of Philippine State College of Aeronautics Fernando Air Base

Campus. Quantitative research uses mathematical theories and statistics.

The researchers believed that descriptive method is the best to use in the

analysis and interpretation of the study because this method is a fact-finding study with

adequate and accurate interpretation. Moreover, using this method provides a basic

contribution as procedures go by and it creates a good relationship with the

respondents. It also deals with the appropriate investigation which results to the desired

outcome and credible conclusions from the information gathered in the study.

Participants of the Study

Fourth year students from Philippines State College of Aeronautics are validated

in conducting our research because they experience both face to face and online class.

In line with the study, the respondents of the study would be from all the Aircraft

Maintenance Technology and Aviation Electronics Technology students. With the total

number of 80 respondents for the study since they all have experienced the same

scenario. In that way, the researchers could find the reliable information they need for

the study.

Research Instrument

The researchers used self-made survey questionnaire that serves as the study’s main

instrument that resulted by collecting info about the study. Google Form were distributed to the

Fourth Year Aircraft Maintenance Technology Students at Philippine State College of

Aeronautics Fernando Air Base Campus. The questionnaires are divided into two parts. The first

part consists the profile of the respondents in terms of gender, section and course.

The second part were determined the factors that may affect their adaptation towards

online learning. The statements provided by the researchers are based on their experience. The

respondents rated it as strongly agree, agree, disagree and strongly disagree.

The items were deconstructed and interpreted based on the following scales:

SCALE MEAN RATING INTERPRETATION

4 3.51-4.00 Strongly Agree

3 2.51-3.50 Agree

2 1.51- 2.50 Disagree

1 1.00-1.50 Strongly Disagree

Data Gathering Procedure

In gathering data, researchers used statistical instrument that collected the respondent’s

answers from their profile and factors that affect their behavior towards online learning.

Researchers’ eagerness to gathered data made through reading books, research from the

internet and other related materials can be used or concerning about factors affecting students

behaviour towards online learning. From the evaluated studies, and articles, researchers made a

draft of the instrument. This was immediately examined by their quantitative research teacher.

Researchers made letter of request to close the permission from the head of college

department at Philippine State College of Aeronautics Fernando Air Base Campus and for

number of respondents w/ numerical Fourth Year Aircraft Maintenance Technology Students

and Aviation Electronics Technology for conducting the study. After the approval, researchers

distributed the questionnaires and systematic random choose respondents to answer the

questionnaire honestly and correct. The questionnaires were immediately retrieved from the

respondent’s response written in the questionnaires were analyzed, interpreted and statistically

treated.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter is in line with presentation, analysis and interpretation of data. The

researchers collected information and discussed the finding in a sequential technique in

time with the statement of the problem indicated in the study.

1. Respondent’s Profile

In order to derive a more accurate result for the study, it is important that the

researchers sought the respondent’s profile. It comprises the gender, course, and

section of the different respondents involved in data gathering. The gathered information

served as the basis for the succeeding undertaking.

positive impact on my academic

performance.
General Weighted Mean 2.9975 Agree

Table 2.1 represents the different factors that affect students’ way of adapting to

online learning. As seen on the table, statements 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, and 11 all got an

interpretation of “Agree”, by having a mean of 3.275, 3.5, 3.375, 2.8125, 2.5375, and

2.9625 respectively. This indicates that having the appropriate resources and any other

supports are crucial for a student to adapt to online learning. These resources include

stable internet connection, quality gadget, a conducive environment for learning, as well

as other material resources like paper, pens, notebook, and many more. By having an

easy access to such resources, students would experience less hassle during their

learning times online. However, not all students are guaranteed to have an access over

the aforementioned learning resources. This causes many students to be less motivated

and struggle more during the online learning. At the worst case scenario, students would

drop-out of their classes since they are unable to perform their academic tasks due to

lack of quality resources. However, the learning resource is not the only factor that affect

the students’ adaptation to online learning. Based on the table, statement 3 got the

highest mean of 3.55 and an interpretation of “Strongly Agree”, while statements 4, 6,

12, and 13 got an interpretation of “Agree”, garnering a mean of 3.1875, 3.075, 2.65, and

2.625 respectively. This connotes the fact that the eagerness of the students as well as

their dedication to learn plays a vital factor in their way of adapting to online learning.

With that being said, it is important to highlight that those students who are more eager

to learn and participate in class are more satisfied with online learning as compared to

students who just submits requirements for them to finish the year. Perhaps, this also

23
REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES
PHILIPPINE STATE COLLEGE OF AERONAUTICS
Fernando Air Base Campus, Lipa City, Batangas

goes hand-in-hand with the availability of the students’ resources. In addition, time

management also affects the way students adapt to online learning. As seen from the

table, statement 5 got an interpretation of “Agree” and a mean of 3.075, which means

that students are able to manage their time wisely. This allows them to adapt well on

online classes and activities since they have more time to spend for their personal

things. On the contrary, people who tend to procrastinate and people who really who do

not have enough free time finds it hard to adjust with the pace of the online learning.

Furthermore, statements 14 and 15 also showed an interpretation of “Agree”, by having

a mean of 3.1 and 2.8215. The two consecutive statements reveals that improvements

during online learning also affect students’ adaptation towards the given setup. This is

because most people who sees that they are improving during the online setup may

yearn for more experience than those who do not. This makes them adapt more easily to

the challenges brought by online learning as they find it productive and efficient. Lastly,

statement 10 is the only statement which showed an interpretation of “Disagree” by

having a mean of 2.425. This means that majority of the respondents experience a poor

body clock, connoting a negative effect on their adaptation towards online learning.

Ultimately, the aforementioned factors are clearly vital on the students’ perception and

behavior when adapting to online learning.

Table 2.2 reveals the significant difference of the factors affecting the students’

adaptation towards online learning, measured using the one-tailed T-Test of two

samples with unequal variances. Under the same degrees of freedom of 158, the

results have generated both statistically significant and insignificant difference between

the factors. Based on the compiled data above, it can be seen that statements 1, 2, 3, 4,

7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, showed a t-stat of 3.813, 5.911, 6.824, 2.230, 4.404, -1.782, -

4.038, -4.750,

-3.045, -3.521, and -1.837 respectively. Since their t-stat is beyond the one tail t-critical

value of 1.66, it is safe to assume that there is a significant difference between the

factors and the students’ adaptation towards online learning. This means that the

practices of each of the respondents are different from the practice of the total

population. This is because each respondent have a different practice with regard to the

different mentioned factors. Meanwhile, statements 5, 6, 11, and 14 showed that there is

no significant difference on the practice of each respondents to that of the whole

population, by garnering a t-stat of 0.813, 0.860, -0.357, and 1.043 respectively. This

26
REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES
PHILIPPINE STATE COLLEGE OF AERONAUTICS
Fernando Air Base Campus, Lipa City, Batangas

implies that the responses of the respondents in the aforementioned statements

accurately reflect their attitude towards online learning.

Despite having both statistically significant and insignificant differences, it is

noticeable from Table 2.2 that all factors reveal a positive p-value. By having so, all

factors are deemed to have positive relationship towards a well adaptation of online

learning. In this case, as previously found on Table 2.1, almost all of the respondents

have agreed that they practice the different mentioned factors. Overall, this assumes

that all of the respondents adapt well to online learning.

Chapter 5
