LESSON 4 ARTICULATORY SYSTEM FOR SPEECH

PRODUCTION
ARTICULATORY SYSTEM

 The roof of the mouth comprises of the teeth ridge, the hard palate, the
soft palate and the uvula.
 The convex bony part of the roof of the mouth, behind the upper front
teeth is called the teeth ridge. After the teeth ridge lies the hard palate.
The roof of the mouth then suddenly becomes soft and fleshy. This is
called the soft palate. The fleshy structure hanging lose at the end of the
mouth is called the uvula.
ORAL AND NASAL SOUNDS

 The soft palate acts like a valve in opening and closing the nasal passage of air.
If the soft palate is raised the passage into the nose is closed. The air cannot
pass through the nose at all. The sounds are then produced from the mouth
and the sounds produced are known as oral sounds.
 If the soft palate is lowered, the passage into the nose is opened. The air from
the lungs escape into the outer atmosphere only through the nose. Sounds
which are produced when the air escapes from the nose are called nasal
sounds. E.g.., sum, sun, and sung. The sounds /m/, /n/ and /ŋ/ (ing) are nasal
sounds.
Oral Sounds Nasal Sounds
NASALISED SOUNDS

 There are certain sounds, during the articulation of which the soft palate
is lowered, thus opening the nasal passage of air. But the oral passage of
air is not blocked and thus both oral and nasal passages remain open. The
air from the lungs will then escape simultaneously through the nose and
the mouth. Such sounds are called nasalised sounds. The vowels in Hindi
words like, आँख and ऊँट are examples of nasalised sounds.
