Map of Ireland
For a long time, England wanted to take
over Ireland. The Irish didn’t like this, so
they fought back.

In 1916 Ireland and England had a treaty

for peace called the Easter Rising.
This made 32 Counties of Ireland as the
Republic of Ireland and the other 6
Counties are Northern Ireland and they
belong to England. This symbolizes that
the green is the Republic of Ireland which
is mostly Catholic and Northern Ireland
which is Orange for the Non-Catholics, or
called Protestants.

Ireland is a very small country that fits

inside of the US state of Kansas.

It is an island surrounded by the Atlantic

Ocean and the Irish Sea.
Saint Patrick
Saint Patrick was not Irish! He was a hero in Ireland.
Where he was born, is unknown but probably Scotland
or Britain (England).
However, one day a band of pirates landed in south
Wales and kidnapped this boy along with many others.
Then they sold him into slavery in Ireland. The was
there for 6 years, mostly imprisoned. He escaped and
went to Britain and then France. He became a priest a
Catholic priest in France and went back to Ireland.
There he converted the Gaelic Irish, who were then
mostly Pagans, to Christianity.
Patrick was arrested several times, but escaped each
time because they thought he was upsetting the
Druids. For 20 years he had traveled throughout
Ireland, establishing monasteries across the country.
He also set up schools and churches, which would aid
him in his conversion. It is said that he used the
three-leafed shamrock to explain the concept of the
Trinity. Saint Patrick had put the curse of God on
venomous snakes in Ireland. He drove all the snakes
into the sea where they drowned.

St. Patrick died on March 17, AD 461.
