2021 DEVELOPMENTS

Lockdown periods and ongoing restrictions lead to A total volume


decline in 2020
In 2021, beer witnessed a slight recovery in volume sales after a sharp decline in both the on-
trade and off-trade in 2020. Peru’s ongoing restrictions and curfews hampered recovery and
limited consumption, however, even before the pandemic, beer volumes had been under
pressure.
Interest in premium brands has been growing with the arrival of Heineken in Peru, which has
launched several global brands such as Tiger, Amstel, Sol and Dos Equis. In addition, various
companies are expanding their portfolio to compete in beer. Some brands that are expanding in
retail outlets include Paulaner, Estrella Damm, Estrella Galicia and Kunstmann.
The arrival of Heineken in Peru, which has acquired local beer Tres Cruces and launched
several global brands including Tiger, Amstel, Sol and Dos Equis. Beer brands such as Stella
Artois and Heineken have launched smaller beer formats in 250ml and 269ml sizes, as opposed
to the standard sizes of 330ml and 350ml.

Beer brands such as Stella Artois and Heineken have launched smaller beer formats in 250ml
and 269ml sizes, as opposed to the standard sizes of 330ml and 350ml. Smaller formats have
already been embraced by brands such as Peruvian Cusqueña and Barbarian, as well as
Corona, whose 210ml Coronita version is one of the most popular in the beer category.
There has been a growing preference for individual cans since 2020 with 620-litre beers being
consumed to a lesser extent. The success of the single-serve format was especially seen
among imported beers and artisanal options, which benefited from being present in modern
retailers and having strong digital strategies. However, the large formats remain popular among
more price-sensitive beer drinkers.

Lima Services SAC (Heineken) enters Peru to take on Unión de


Cervecerías Peruanas Backus Y Johnston (AB-Inbev)
Unión de Cervecerías Peruanas Backus y Johnston continued to dominate the beer
landscape in Peru in 2021 with a near monopoly. Owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, one of
the company's challenges in the review period was accommodating the increase in tax which, in
turn, boosted beer prices, affecting in particular mid-priced and premium domestic beers such

as Cristal, Pilsen and Cusqueña. Unión de Cervecerías Peruanas Backus y Johnston, has been
focusing on promoting global brands such as Stella Artois, Budweiser, Corona and Michelob
Ultra in the local market. As a part of its effort to promote local and imported premium beers, the
company launched the BeerHouse e-commerce platform. In addition to promoting premium
global brands, the platform also promoted a range of the company's craft beers.
Tres Cruces was acquired by Heineken from Ajeper SA in 2020, a mid-priced beer that is
taking share from leaders Cristal and Pilsen. Competition between Anheuser-Busch InBev and
Heineken NV will intensify as brands become more aggressive in product development and
promotions at point of sale, especially in modern grocery stores.

PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Economy lager will become more relevant to beer drinkers


Economy lager has emerged as a new beer category since the pandemic as price sensitive
consumers sought out cheaper options for home consumption. Although growing from a low
base, economy lagers are expected to grow dramatically over the forecast period aided by rising
inflation and new product development.
Golden is the dominant brand in economy lager, a yellow corn-based beer produced by Unión
de Cervecerías Peruanas Backus and Johnston. The only competition faced by this domestic
player comes from imported beers that are popular in self-service stores including Koperwiek
and Landvik. Both are imported by the retail chains Supermercados Peruanos and Cencosud,
respectively, with Portuguese Koperwiek being the leader in the subcategory.

Craft beers to gain popularity through wider distribution


Craft beers will continue to expand in retail outlets over the forecast period bringing different
brands to consumers. Craft beers have already made strong progress through wider distribution
in modern grocery outlets such as supermarkets and convenience stores. Barbarian, owned by
Anheuser-Busch InBev together with other brands as Candelaria, Dörcher Bier, Sierra Andina
and 7 Vidas have improved volume share by expanding distribution at a national level. In
addition, imported brands such as BrewDog, Innis and Gun have been able to compete by
selling online and through specialised stores. Packaging the beers in can formats is becoming
more common, which helps with both storage and distribution.

E-commerce platforms to support future beer volume growth


E-commerce has helped producers and distributors replace some of the lost volume sales
from the on-trade, which was left crippled by the pandemic. Leading beer brands, industrial and
craft producers, as well as importers and distributors have developed their own virtual stores
and started selling through mobile delivery applications such as Rappi and PedidosYa.
Anheuser-Busch InBev stands out with its Backus Ya e-commerce platform, use sell their own
brands, in addition to merchandising and spirits from companies such as Diageo and Bebidas
Premium. Moving forward, players will continue to leverage these e-commerce players to drive
off-trade sales, which will see healthy growth over the forecast period.

Lager price band methodology


▪ Premium lager is mainly composed of Cusqueña and its versions Trigo and Red Lager, and
imported brands such as Corona Extra, Heineken, Stella Artois, Peroni, and Grolsch, amongst
others. Mid-priced and economy lager include both domestic and imported brands, with mid-
priced being the strongest price band and containing brands like Cristal, Pilsen Callao, Pilsen
Trujillo, Budweiser, Pacífico and Amstel.
▪ A new market space has emerged in relation to economic beers, with Golden as the only
domestic brand and Koperwiek and Landvik, the only imported brand produced by the retail
chains Supermercados Peruanos and Cencosud, respectively.
▪ Artisanal beers are in a price range similar to that of premium beers with a price range of
between PEN9.9 – PEN30.0.
