Why it’s important Over the past the Karen, one of the largest ethnic minorities in Burma, have been oppressed by the Burmese junta – murder, rape and 3,200 villages destroyed in the last decade. One in 5 Karen children die before the age of five and one in 12 Karen mothers dies as the result of childbirth. Burma Humanitarian trains backpack medics and outfits them with medicine. The medics hike into eastern Burma providing trauma care and community health services. Where the medics go, deaths from dysentery and malaria have dropped by 50%. 100% of individual donations buy medicine or train medics. $5 saves a pregnant woman from malaria.
