B. Presenting the Now we are ready for our new topic

New Lesson which is Identifying
Important Details in Expository Text
Listened to

What is an expository text?

Let us read Expository text:

 Informative texts that explain
something to the readers.
 They give facts and information
about a specific topic.
 They author’s purpose is to inform
describe, or explain his or her topic.
 Fact based texts.
 They are non-fiction texts that
provide information or details about
a particular topic or subject matter
Expository text are found in the
following materials:

These are Textbooks, News Papers,

Magazines, Bibliographies,
Encyclopedias and Atlases

Here is one example of an expository

text.

How the Clouds are form?

Clouds formation starts with
evaporation as the water on Earth is
heated by the sun. The water vapor rise
into the air. The tiny droplets of water
group together and become clouds. If
the air becomes cold enough, the clouds
falls down as rain!

So this kind of paragraph that gives

information is an expository text.

C. Establishing the
purpose of the Okay I will group you in to 2 groups
lesson each group will be given a flag that says
TRUE or FALSE Raise the flag TRUE
if the statement about an expository text
is correct, and FALSE if it is not.

Okay are you ready?

Yes ma’am
It present information and facts.

1, 2,3,4,5 Raise your answers

TRUE
It aims to amuse or entertain the readers.

1, 2,3,4,5 Raise your answers

FALSE
It may present a process or steps in
doing something.

1, 2,3,4,5 Raise your answers

TRUE
It is fictional in nature

1, 2,3,4,5 Raise your answers

FALSE
Okay very good class!

There are five ways in presenting an

expository text. The first one is
1. Description
2. Sequence
3. Contrast and Comparison
4. Cause and effect
5. Problems & Solutions
So let’s discuss the first element of an
expository text which is description.

What is description?
Please read
Description- It presents characteristics,
features and examples to describe a
In other words it tells what a person, subject or topic.
things, or animals look like.

Okay for example:

Example: Dogs have four legs and make
a bark “woof” or “arf” sound. Dogs
often chase cats, and most dog will fetch
a ball or stick. Dogs can smell and hear
better than humans, but can not see well
in color because they are color blind.
Due to the anatomy of the eye, dogs can
see better in dim light than humans.

So in this example we use the element

of description.

Why? Because it present the

characteristics and features of a Dog. It
describes the dog that it has four legs
and it barks

Okay let us have the second element of

an expository text.

Sequence- present items or events in

numerical or chronological order.

Example: These are the four-step Math

Problem Solving Strategies and
Techniques. First, understand the
problem. Second, choose a strategy to
solve the problem. Then carry out the
problem solving strategy, and lastly,
check the solution

So in this example we use the element

of ?
Sequence
Okay very good! Because it presents the
4 steps Math Problems solving
strategies and techniques in numerical
or chronological orders.

Next element

Comparison and Contrast- explain how

two or more things are alike or different.
When we say comparison it means to
compare or to look for similarities or the
things that they are the same. On the
other hand contrast is something to look
for their differences.

Okay let’s take a look of this example.

We have a diagram here.

So we have here on the left circle the

characteristics of a dog and on the right
circle the characteristics of the cat. So
we used a compare and contrast here.

As you can see on the left side of the

circle the characteristics of the dog, they
bark, they chase cat, they like to play,
and need to be given a bath to get clean.

On the right side of the circle which is

the characteristics of the cats, they
meow, they chase mice, they like to
sleep, can lick themselves clean.

Those are the differences of the dog and

the cat. Now let us all look in the middle
of the circle here. In the middle are the
things that are alike in dogs and cats.
Things that are the same.

Let’s read it They are both type of pet

and they are both have fur

Okay this diagram is an example of a

compare and contrast.

Next element Cause and effect- explains

the causes and the results.

So here is the example of cause and

effect:
When we say cause it is the reason why
it is happen while effect it is the result-
what happen.

The signal words that can be used are

the ff.

Because, so, since, as a result, if , then,

therefor, due to.

Okay let’s look at the example here, the

girl is watering the plants so the effect is
that the flower blooms and that is an
example of cause and effect.

The last element is the problem &

solution.

Problem and solutions- states a problem

and lists a solution/s for it.

When we say problem it is the trouble

that happens to a character in the story
while the solution is how the problem
were fixed in the story.

Let’s take a look on the example here

If your problem is too hot the solution is

that you should go for a swim.

And if your problem is it is raining then

go get an umbrella

That is an example of a problem and

solution.
D. Presenting Now that you know already learn the
example/ instance expository texts and its elements you try

is used in each item. Select your
