Penetration Tests (SPTs) were performed in all the boreholes in accordance with
ASTM D 1586.

Soil samples were collected from designated depths from each borehole for
identification and subsequent laboratory testing. Selected soil samples were subjected
to various laboratory tests for classification, estimation of strength and chemical
characteristics.

The report has been compiled based on the geotechnical investigations conducted at
the project site and the subsequent laboratory testing performed on the selected soil
and water samples. It includes an assessment of the subsurface soil stratigraphy,
foundation design parameters and recommendations regarding the allowable bearing
capacity of shallow foundations, as well as the chemical aggressivity of subsurface
soil.

The locations of all the investigation points are indicated on the Geotechnical
Investigation Plan, as illustrated in Fig. 2-1 in Appendix-A.

2 FIELD INVESTIGATIONS

2.1 General

The field investigations encompassed the following activities:

- Drilling of nine (09) exploratory boreholes

- In-situ testing i.e Standard Penetration Test (SPT) in boreholes
- Collection of disturbed & undisturbed soil samples from boreholes.

This chapter provides a discussion of the particulars of the fieldwork, while

photographs depicting various field activities are appended in Appendix-D.

2.2 Drilling of Exploratory Boreholes

A total of nine (09) exploratory boreholes were conducted at the site, with eight (08)
drilled to a depth of 30.5 meters (100 feet) below the existing ground level (EGL) and
one (01) drilled to a depth of 46.5 meters (150 feet) below EGL. All the boreholes were
drilled using straight rotary drilling rig and the holes were stabilized by circulating
bentonite mud in the holes The diameter of all the boreholes is approximately 150mm.
Split spoon sampler was used without liner and SPTs were performed in these
boreholes at 1.0m depth interval down to 30m depth and thereafter at 1.5m interval
down to maximum drilled depth of 46.5m. Undisturbed soil samples were collected
from cohesive strata using Denison tubes.

Borehole logs were maintained to document all materials encountered during drilling
and data from the Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) conducted in each borehole was
recorded on these logs. These borehole logs, as well as photographs taken in the field,
can be found in Appendix-B and Appendix-D, respectively.

The locations of the boreholes drilled during these investigations are depicted on the
Geotechnical Investigations Plan, which is provided in Fig. 2-1 of Appendix-A.

2.3 In-situ Testing

During these field investigations, in-situ Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was
performed in each borehole. A brief discussion of the in-situ test in boreholes is
provided below.

2.3.1 Standard Penetration Test (SPT)

For evaluating the consistency and compactness of foundation soils, Standard

Penetration Tests (SPTs) were performed in all the exploratory boreholes at a general
depth interval of at 1.0m depth interval to 30m depth and thereafter at 1.5m interval to
maximum drilled depth of 46.5m. SPTs were conducted in accordance with the
procedures described in latest version of ASTM designation D-1586. A donut type
hammer, weighing 63.5 kg, was used for the tests. The hammer was lifted and dropped
manually through a manila rope using a pulley hanged with the tripod stand. A split
spoon sampler was used for all the tests. Disturbed soil samples were obtained
through the split spoon sampler. Profiles of observed SPT (N55) values and corrected
SPT (N1)70 values are shown on Fig. 2-2 to Fig. 2-3 respectively. These figures are
appended in Appendix-A.

2.4 Sampling

Disturbed soil samples were obtained from the boreholes through split spoon sampler
while performing SPTs. The disturbed samples were placed in polythene bags and
preserved in wide-mouthed plastic jars. The jars were clearly labelled to indicate the
project name, project code, borehole designation and depth of sampling.

Undisturbed soil samples were obtained from the boreholes at designated depths by
using Shelby/Denison samplers. The undisturbed soil samples were properly waxed
and labelled to indicate the project name, project code, borehole designation and depth
of sampling.

All soil samples were transported with great care to the laboratory testing facility of M/s
Berkeley Associates (Pvt) Ltd., located in Lahore, for subsequent laboratory testing.

4 GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF SUBSOIL

4.1 General

The geotechnical investigations for the project involved a combination of field and
laboratory work The field and laboratory investigations were aimed at evaluating the
engineering characteristics of the foundation soils. The subsurface conditions and
engineering and chemical characteristics of the soils existing at the proposed project
site are discussed in the following sections.

4.2 Topography

The topography of the project site is predominately flat. The alluvial deposits were
encountered in the project area which mainly consist of flood plain deposits. As
provided by the Client, ground elevation of all boreholes is taken as El.0.00m.

4.3 Stratigraphy

During these investigations, the subsurface was explored to a maximum depth of

46.5m (150 ft) below the existing ground level (EGL) and the following lithological units
have been identified;

• Loose man-made Fill Material overlying the 1st natural soil layer, comprises
Clayey Silt/Silty Clay intermixed with gravel. It varies in thickness from 0.3m to
0.6m.
• The 1st natural soil layer comprises LEAN CLAY / SILTY CLAY that extends
to maximum depth of 5.0m below EGL.
• The 2nd natural soil layer comprises SILTY SAND / POORLY GRADED SAND
with SILT which extends to maximum explored depth of 46.5m below EGL.
Some small pockets of Lean Clay have also been observed in some boreholes.

The above information has been detailed on the respective borehole logs and linear
subsurface profiles developed on the basis of borehole logs as shown in Fig. 4-1 to
Fig 4-3 (Appendix-A).

4.4 Chemical Aggressivity

On the basis of concentrations of sulfates determined in the foundation soil and water
samples collected from boreholes, the severity is classified as "Not Applicable" with
“Class S0” as explained in ACI 318M-08 Table 4.2.1. Based on the concentrations of
sulfates, it is recommended to use Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) for substructure.

4.5 Site Classification

In accordance with the Building Code of Pakistan (Ref. 7.2), the criteria for
classification of uncemented soil profiles are to be based on;

• 𝑣̅𝑠 = average shear wave velocity of the top 100 ft (30 m).
or
• ̅ 𝑜𝑟 ̅̅̅̅̅
𝑁 𝑁𝑐ℎ = average field SPT resistance for the top 100 ft (30 m).
or
• 𝑠̅𝑢 = average undrained shear strength for the top 100 ft (30 m).

̅) observed down to 30m

Based on the average field standard penetration resistance (𝑁
depth, the site soil as per Building Code of Pakistan (BCP-2021) should be classified
as Site Class D (Stiff Soil).

4.6 Seismicity
According to the Building Code of Pakistan (BCP-2021) Table C-1 issued by Pakistan
Engineering Council (Ref. 7.2), the spectral acceleration with ground motion level at
2% probability of exceedance in 50 years (2475 Years Return Period) for Lahore City
is as follows:
Short-Period Spectral Response acceleration (0.2-second), Ss = 0.49
Long-Period Spectral Response acceleration (1-second), S1= 0.14

4.7 Groundwater Observations

During these geotechnical investigations, groundwater was encountered at an average

depth of 7.5m below EGL, during the month of May, 2023.

5 FOUNDATION DESIGN
5.1 General
Various field and laboratory tests have been carried out during these geotechnical
investigations. These test results have been examined for evaluation of subsurface
conditions at the project site and determination of geotechnical design parameters.

Design parameters have been selected on the basis of field & laboratory test results,
literature and engineering judgement. Evaluations have been made for allowable
bearing pressures for the shallow foundations which are discussed in the following
sections.

5.2 Type of Foundation

Keeping in view the requirement of structural foundations and subsurface soil

conditions present at the site, strip/isolated square footings and raft/mat foundation
have been evaluated. The design criteria and geotechnical design parameters,
allowable bearing pressures for shallow foundations are discussed in the following
sections.

5.3 Design Parameters

Field and laboratory test data have been used to determine the foundation design
parameters. Following soil parameters are recommended for design of shallow
foundations below existing ground level;

5.4 Shallow Foundations

The type and depth of footings, design criteria and net allowable bearing pressures are
discussed in the following sections.

5.4.1 Depth of Foundations

Keeping in view type of building and subsurface stratigraphy, isolated square/strip

footings & raft/mat foundations were evaluated at El.-5.0m i.e. at 1.0m below basement
level (El. -4.0m), for various foundation sizes as shown in Fig. 5-1 and Fig. 5-2
(Appendix-A), respectively.

5.4.2 Design Criteria

For evaluation of allowable bearing pressures, the following two criteria are adopted;

i- The allowable load should not initiate shear failure of the foundation
soils, and

ii- The total as well as differential settlements caused by the application of

superimposed loads should be within specified tolerable limit of 25.4mm
for square/strip foundations and 50.8m for raft/mat foundations.

5.4.3 Allowable Bearing Pressures

The allowable bearing pressures were determined by Meyerhof (1956) approach (Ref.
7.1). The evaluated net/gross allowable bearing pressures for various foundation sizes
placed at El.-5.0m are shown on Fig. 5-1 to Fig. 5-2 (Appendix-A).

The allowable bearing pressures as provided in this report are for normal axial loads
on level ground. For eccentric loading conditions, the axial load, Pa will be:

Pa = qa . Aeff

Doc. No. J-827
Report on Geotechnical Investigations Page 11 of 14
Rev. 00
© 2023 Berkeley Associates (Pvt.) Ltd.
where,

Pa = gross allowable load

Aeff = effective foundation area = (L-2ex) (B-2ey)
qa = allowable bearing pressure for axial loads, and
L = length of foundation
B = breadth of foundation
ex = magnitude of eccentricity along L
ey = magnitude of eccentricity along B

5.4.4 Modulus of Subgrade Reaction

Modulus of subgrade reaction Ks to be used in computer model for structural analysis

can be evaluated from the basic definition of Ks by using the evaluated net allowable
bearing pressure which causes the settlement under the maximum structural load and
is as follows:
For Square/Strip foundations with 25.4 mm tolerable settlement

Ks (kN/m3) = Evaluated Net Allowable Bearing Pressure x FS______

Settlement (25.4 mm) under maximum structural pressure

For Mat foundations with 50.8 mm tolerable settlement

Ks (kN/m3) = Evaluated Net Allowable Bearing Pressure x FS______

Settlement (50.8 mm) under maximum structural pressure

Since, the allowable bearing pressures are controlled by settlement criteria therefore
Factor of Safety (FS) should be taken as 1.0.

5.5 Construction Considerations

The soils at foundation level should be carefully inspected prior to placing the
foundations to ensure that the soils are similar to those encountered in the boreholes.
For any different soil conditions, geotechnical engineer must be consulted prior to
initiating foundation construction.

6 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

1. During these investigations, the subsurface was explored to a maximum depth

of 46.5m below the existing ground level (EGL) using hydraulic feed straight
rotary drilling technique. Soil layers encountered at the site below the existing
ground surface are described in section 4.3.

2. During the period of these geotechnical investigations, groundwater was

encountered at an average 7.5m depth below existing ground level (EGL)
during the month of May 2023.

̅) observed
3. On the basis of average field standard penetration resistance (𝑁
down to 15m depth, the site soil as per Building Code of Pakistan should be
classified as Site Class D (Stiff Soil).

4. The evaluated net allowable bearing pressures for different sizes of

square/strip footings placed at El. -5.0m below basement level of El. -4.0m are
shown on Fig. 5-1 (Appendix-A).

The evaluated net/gross allowable bearing pressures for raft/mat foundations

placed at El.-5.0m below one basement level of El. -4.0m are shown on Fig. 5-
2 (Appendix-A).

5. Based on the concentrations of sulfates determined in the foundation soil

samples collected from boreholes, the severity is classified as "Not Applicable"
with Class “S0” as explained in ACI 318M-08 Table 4.2.1. Based on the
concentrations of sulfates, severity and class, it is recommended to use
Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) for substructure.

6. Short-period and Long-period spectral response acceleration are provided in

section 4.6.

7. Before commencing foundation construction, it is crucial to conduct a thorough

examination of the soils at the foundation level to ensure their similarity to the
soils encountered in the boreholes. If there are any variations in the soil
conditions, it is imperative to consult a geotechnical engineer for guidance
before proceeding with the foundation construction.
