PINTO ART MUSEUM: SOLO EXHIBITION PROPOSAL

EXHIBITOR: FRANCIS ALINGCAYON

I. Artist Profile
Artist Statement

Francis Alingcayon is a modern surrealist artist who is a native of

Bontoc, Mountain Province, Philippines, and was born and raised in Baguio City.
Francis' interest in drawing started in childhood as a hobby; he began making
paintings and joining various art groups and exhibits way back in 2016 as a self-
taught artis. He initially explored learning various forms and colors as well as
arranging them to fit inside the canvas to create a full concept. He’s been
primarily working with acrylic and is currently traversing his style in mixed media
by painting surreal patterns of infinite boxes. He describes it as being outside the
box or seeing life from a different point of view without being confined by just a
limited pool of thoughts. His playful use of whimsical images by combining 3D and
2D flat shapes helps him achieve a more dynamic and natural composition, which
helps create weird and surreal creatures that are all inspired by imagination.
While painting, he keeps an exuberant mind by dwelling on the theme and then
gradually defining it on the canvas. The process of constructing art without a
course of action allows him to freely create visual outputs that are surreal and
sometimes nostalgic. The sense of surprise and excitement he gains from his art
style is what motivates him to finish every artwork.
Francis’s artworks are deeply rooted in the psychological narrative, aiming
to explore the concepts of dreams, imagination, and the altered state of our
minds, which affect the way we perceive our reality as a consciousness existing in
this material world. His statement as an artist is to promote the importance of
one’s self-awareness, fueled by his purpose of encouraging every individual to
make more time to self-reflect, reprocessing their internal dilemmas to find
balance in both good and bad.

II. Proposed Theme: HOME
Home is often considered a safe haven from the dangers and stresses of
the outside world. It is a place where individuals can relax, feel comfortable, and
let their guard down. The sense of security that comes with being at home allows
people to escape from the chaos of daily life and find solace in familiar
surroundings. For many, the feeling of safety that comes with being at home is
essential to their well-being. It is a place where they can be themselves and feel
protected from harm. In times of crisis or uncertainty, home becomes even more
important as a refuge from the outside world.
Have you ever visited a place and felt an intangible feeling of happiness or
serenity? It is not something that can be easily explained, but it is a feeling that
you know when you experience it. This feeling can be brought about by a
combination of factors, such as the physical features of the location, the people
around you, and even the weather. Some might refer to this feeling as the "vibe"
or "aura" of a place. It is a powerful experience that can leave a lasting impression
on you, making it a place that you will always remember. Attachment to places is
a common feeling among people. It's the connection we feel to certain locations
that holds significant meaning for us. This attachment can develop for a variety of
reasons, such as growing up in a certain area, having fond memories associated
with a place, or simply feeling a sense of comfort and familiarity. It can be so
strong that it becomes a part of our identity and can even impact our mental
well-being. For example, if we are forced to leave a place we are attached to, we
may experience feelings of sadness, grief, and even depression. Overall,
attachment to places is a natural and important part of the human experience.
The concept of life as a journey back to God or a source is found in many
religious and spiritual beliefs, and it is the idea that we are all on a path or
journey towards ultimately returning to our divine origin.
Along the way, we encounter various challenges, obstacles, and lessons
that help us evolve and progress towards our ultimate destination. The idea of life
as a journey back to God or a source provides a framework for understanding our
purpose and place in the world. It can inspire us to live with intention, seek out
experiences that help us grow, and find meaning in the ups and downs of life.
When life gets tough, it can be easy to feel hopeless and lost, but it is important
to hold onto hope, focus on the things that bring joy, and make time for activities
that make us feel happy and fulfilled. Holding on to hope can help us persevere
and come out stronger on the other side.
