RETARDER CA
Classification Retarding agent
Application
When installing castables under extreme hot conditions, the usage of an retarder may be adequate.
RHI supplies an additive under the brand name “RETARDER CA”.
The exact dosage of the additive is very important since even the smallest deviation will result in severe
changes of the setting time.
Delivery
The retarding agent is delivered as a dry powder, which has to be mixed into the dry refractory mix.
Processing
The retarding agent has to be mixed into the dry refractory mix.
The dry mixing time should be at least 1 minute to ensure the even distribution of the powder.
For the wet-mixing process refer to the processing guidelines of the refractory castables.
Dosage
At processing temperatures above 30 °C (~ 90 °F), the quantity of retarder to be added, ranges from 0,01
weight-% up to a maximum of 0,05 wt%.
Generally begin adding the smallest amount of accelerator. Pay special attention to the flowability, the
compaction behaviour and the setting behaviour of the castable.
Thus, the dosage has to be done very carefully, because an over-dosage (> 0,05 wt%) leads to a very slow
setting (in the worst case up to some days) and to severe impairments of the flowability.
The water addition must in no case exceed the maximum quantity indicated on the technical data sheet.
