V. PLOT

A. EXPOSITION

Aksionov there was a young merchant who lives in Vladimir. He has

wife and young children. One summer, as Aksionov sets off for Nizhy

fair to sell his goods, his wife warns him not to go, for she has had a

nightmare in which he returned with grey hair. He laughs her concern

that the nightmare was a premonition and interprets luck.

B. RISING ACTION

When Akisionov met a merchant, they drank tea together and later

went to the same rooms. As he decided to check in an inn. Aksionov

founds out that the merchant he met that night before has been found

murdered, and the officials accused him of killing the merchant since

there was a knife with blood stains on his bag.

C. CLIMAX

Aksionov was arrested by the officials. His wife visited him in jail and

faint at the sight of him dressed as a criminal. She asks him if he

committed the murder and Aksionov weeps. He puts his faith in God

and accepts his sentencing and ceremonial flogging. He is sent to work

in the Siberian mines. Over twenty-six in Siberia, Aksionov’s

transforms into pious old man. One day a newly arrived inmate named

Makar Semyonich. He suspected the man is responsible for framing

him. Aksionov remembers everything he has lost and is plunged into

misery.

D. FALLING ACTION

Aksionov suspects Makar, one of the new prisoners, of killing the

merchant. Later he found out that Makar is planning to break in

prison, but he didn’t tell to the authorities. Soldiers found out about the

tunnel Semyonich has made.

E. RESOLUTION

That night Aksionov is about to nod off in his bunk when Semyonich

sits down beside him. He bends over and whispers a plea of forgiveness.

He confessed that it’s was he who killed the merchant and stole his

money; he then planted the knife so that Aksionov would become the

suspect. He begs for forgiveness of Aksionov and promised him to

confess his crime to the officials, Aksionov replies that his life is already

over and he has nowhere to go. Semyonich confessed his crimes to the

governor and the officials arrange Aksionov’s release. However, he had

passed away in peace before the order for his release is executed.

VI. CONFLICTS

The conflict presented in the story is when the Officials interrogate Ivan

about the merchant who was found with his throat cut.

Ivan confronts with the authority again while they discover a secret

tunnel made for eloping. Since Ivan knows the truth about the tunnel, as

he found out Makar digging it on the middle of the night, he had been

threatened to be killed by Makar if he says a word about it. Ivan gets to

his final conflict with himself while Makar comes to him at night

confiding of being the one who murdered the merchant and now seek

for forgiveness from him

VII. CENTRAL IDEA

In this story, there are several themes that the characters may share to

the readers of the story also to other people. Is “forgiveness and trust”.

The story tells us that forgiving someone and trusting the Lord is not

bad at all. The story conveys that we can still be forgiven even we have

done something that went overboard

VIII. THEME

The theme/moral lesson of the story is “you can still be forgiven

even though you did somethings”. And pass the blame you are

responsible for. Cause it will cause a destroying guilt within you.
