I. Procedures
1. For this laboratory exercise, we will used the surveyed data from topographic
survey saved as ASCII text files. Open the Topo Points file and saved it to your
device. Once done, open your Civil 3D Metric.

2. Start new drawing. Type in command line <SAVEAS> and set as

GE403_LabEx3_Surname.dwg then hit enter.
3. Go to Insert Menu Tab, click points from file then
you will see the image shown below. Under
Selected Files, click the plus + button and select
your TopoPoints.scr or TopoPoints.txt. Under the
Specify point file format, select PNEZ (comma
delimited). In preview you will see the Point
number, northing, easting, and point elevation.
Check the Add points to Points Group and set as
surname_topopoints. Under Advanced Options,
check the do elevation adjustment if possible.
Once done click OK.

4. Click the Zoom Extent to see the plotted points. As you can see in the Figure 1.1,
the points closely to each other. To fix it, go to Toolspace and click Points Group,
under points group click your Surname_TopoPoints then right click <Properties>
then refer to figure 1.2 and figure 1.3.

Figure 1.1

Figure 1.2 Figure 1.3

5. Go to Surfaces, click Create Surface and set the name as

<GE403_Surface_Surname>

6. Go to Modify, click suface then add data then point files. Here, just refer to figure
1.4

7. To represent the surface, click surface properties then under surface style, select
contours 1m and 5m (Background)

8. Repeat step no. 7 but this time select contours and triangles

9. Repeat step no. 8 but this time select Elevation Banding (2D), here you will
colorful representation of the surface. The red areas represents the lowest elevations
and the blue areas represent the higher elevations.

10. To change the contour intervals, go to surface properties then refer to the figure 1.5
below. Under Information, set the name as <Surname_SurfaceStyle>, In
Contours, under contour intervals, change the minor interval as 0.25m and for
major interval change it as 1.00m. In Display, click the visible icon for minor and
major contour. Once done, click OK

11. Before we add the contour labels, go to layer properties then turn off the V-NODE
and V-NODE TEXT

12. Go to add labels then select contour-multiple and specify the point from top right
area to lower left area. All contours that intersect the line will be labeled.

13. Once done, compute for the suitable scale for plotting using BL form.

Nhighest = 1,620714.238
Nlowest = 1,620,691.955
Ehighest = 507,630.948
Elowest = 507,556.382

Nhighest - Nlowest
1,620714.238 − 1,620,691.955 = 22.283
Ehighest - Elowest
507,630.948 − 507,556.382 = 74.566
Therefore, the maximum difference in coordinates is 74.566 since E’ > N’

Since the maximum difference in coordinates is

74.566, it falls under 60-90 meters which means
the scale is 1:300

14. Insert your BL template in the drawing based on your computed scale then export
it in PDF File.

Questions:
 What do you think is the point file format?
Since it consist of point number, northing, easting, and point elevation, its point file
format is PNEZ (comma delimited). PNEZ stands for point#, northing, easting, and
elevation.
 What are the different point file format?

We can see in the images below that the different point file format are:
 ENZ (comma delimited)
 XYZ_LIDAR Classification
 Autodesk Uploadable File
 NEZ (comma delimited)
 XYZ_Intensity (comma delimited)
 PENZ (comma delimited)
 PENZD (comma delimited)
 XYZ_RGB (comma delimited)
 PNE (comma delimited)
 PNEZ (comma delimited)
 PNEZD (comma delimited)
 What are the different surface type that you can create?
As we can see in the image in the right side, the different
surface type we can create are:
 TIN surface
 Grid surface
 Grid volume surface
 TIN volume surface
 Choose three surface style and describe how the surface looks.
 Contours and Triangles. In this
surface style we assumed that if
contours are closely spaced, it
means that the land is very steep, if
the contours are widely spaced, it
means the land is more flat. In this
surface, we can say that the land
here is flat and every triangulation
calculation used between the survey
points. The denser the web, the
denser the number of survey points
in an area.

 Contours 1m and 5m (Background).

Unlike in contours and triangles,
here we only see the contour lines.
In this surface style, we only see if
the land is steep or flat. Also, we
can’t assume if there was an error in
the surface.

 Elevation Banding (2D). In surface
style, we see different colors. Those
colors represent if the elevation is
high or low. The red areas are the
lowest elevations and the blue areas
are the higher elevations.
