Animal raising and fish farming can lead to different

entrepreneurial endeavors. These includes sale of live animals
and fish, and production of byproducts like canned fish or
meat. One’s decision to go into animal raising or fish farming
is affected by various factors like personal interest, family
background, educational background, environment and
available resources. One needs to conduct a survey before
embarking into an animal raising business. A survey will give
you a vital information that will help you plan for your animal
raising activity whether it is small scale (backyard farming) or
large scale farming.
P__g/Swin__ rais__ng- Swine can be sold live or as meat or
meat products. It is important to choose the right breed to
raise and make sure to keep your animals healthy and free
from diseases. Standards swine breeds are:
• H__mpshire- this breed is smaller than other breeds
• Dur__c- this breed comes from Ner Jersey. It is a good
producer of milk and has good mothering characteristics
• Yorksh__re- this breed is commonly raised in Canada. It has
large ears with white and black spots. It is good source of
meat
• Landr__ce- this breed comes from Denmark. It has white
hair and skin. Its meat is good for making bacon, ham and
porkchop.
• Hyp__r-this breed has well-muscled back and has superior
milking qualities.
• Pol__nd Chin__- this breed is black in color with white spots
in its feet, tail and face. It has thick meat.
• Tamw__rth- the body is light and dark red in color. Its meat
is best for making bacon.

Swine at different age levels require different feed types to be

given 2 to 3 times per day:
• Start__r M__sh- given to 2 to 8 week old piglets
• Grow__ng M__sh- given to 2 to 6 months old piglets
• Fatt__ning M__sh-given to 10 months old piglets until they
are ready for slaughtering.
Alternative food like camote tops, kangkong, papayaleaves
and ipil-ipil leaves may also be given.

To ensure profitability to swine raising, here are some

important caring tips:
a. Maintain the cleanliness of the pen
b. The size of the pen should be in proportion of the size
and number of swine.
c. Swine should be regularly checked for diseases by a
veterinarian. Regular vaccination is a must.
d. Ample supply of clean water and food is required
every day.
e. Proper waste management should be observed at all
times.
C__w/Cattl__ rais__ng- cattle can be sold live or as meat and
dairy products. Some breeds are best for meat production
like Brahman, Ongole/Nellore, Santa Gertrudis and Bali or
Banteng. Others are best for dairy products such as Brown
Swiss and Holstein Freisian. There are also dual purpose cattle
like Sahiwal and Tharparkar. Cattles are fed through tethering
(tied and allowed to graze for 6-8 hrs.), loose grazing (let loose
to graze in an open grassland), and cut and carry (forage is
cut and fed to the animals). Cattle should be provided with
shed at night. Feeding and drinkinf troughs should also be
provided

Go__t rais__ng- goats are raised for its milk and meat. Goat
farming has potential for profit because its meat is more
expensive than chicken, prok or beef. Good housing should
be provided including feeding racks and water troughs.

F__sh farm__ng is one of the biggest industries in the

Philippines. As an archipelago, surrounded by many bodies
of water, the country is rich in natural resources making fish
farming suitable and viable source of livelihood for many
Filipinos.

Til__pia
Tilapia is one of the most in demand fish in the market today.
Fish growers both locally and abroad are focusing
aquaculture efforts on Tilapia because it grows rapidly. Tilapia
can be harvested after three to four months of feeding.
M__lkfish
It is referred to as the National Fish of the Philippines, Milkfish
or Bangus is very popular for its milky taste. Milkfish requires no
special kind of feed, for its diet. Milkfish can be harvested
after seven to ten months of feeding.

C__tfish
Catfish resembles Cat’s Whiskers. This fish has become a staple food
for many Filipinos especially in the Tagalog Region. Catfish can be
harvested between four to six months of feeding.

Here are some common types of fish enclosures:

a. Dug out/excavated enclosures
b. Concrete/plastic enclosures
c. Fish cages

Possible Hazards in Animal Raising

Bites, kicks, scratches are some of the hazards farmers are
exposed to when working with animals. It is very important to
follow safety rules by using Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE). Here are some of the hazards in raising animals:

1. Physic__l injuri__s- when animals are stressed,

uncomfortable and unfamiliar with humans, they
tend to be wild and end up kicking, biting, rushing
and trampling people.
2. A__r poll__tion- chemical pesticides and animal
wastes if not properly disposed can produce very
unpleasant smell causing air pulution. Animal
wastes attacks flies and insects which are disease-
causing bacteria and other microorganisms.
3. Nois__ poll__tion- exposure to loud noise might
induce hearing damage to farm workers.
4. Inf__ctious dis__ases- several infectious diseases
may be transmitted to humans like influenza,
scabies, ringworm, salmonellosis and other animal
diseases.
5. Ins__ct and p__st infestati__n- if not controlled, flies
and other insects can multiply fast and spead out in
the community.
6. Dang__r of slip__ng the n__edle- while vaccinating,
giving medivcations, drawing blood from animals, a
used needle is dangerous.
7. Possibl__ workpl__ce accid__nts- untoward incident
may exist because of carelessness, wet floor,
disarrayed workplace, damaged electrical and
other equipment.
