PROCREATION:

GAMETE
TRANSPORT

Reporters: TORREGOSA, Claire S.

DAGUIBIG, Patricia S.
OBJECTIVES:

01 Identify the process of gamete

transportation, fertilization, implantation
and the early process of cleavage and
blastocyst formation.

02 Explain how mature male and female

gametes are formed (Gamete
Formation) and come together.
introduction
Transport of gametes to the fallopian tubes,
fertilization, embryo development, formation
of the placenta and pregnancy depend on a
coordinated sequence of events.

Disruption of these events can result in

structural and or functional anomalies in the
fetus and or termination of the pregnancy.
Process of gametes and
fertilization
I. The ovarian follicle, a section of
the ovary, releases an egg once a
month during ovulation. The term
"egg" can also refer to an ovum,
oocyte, or female gamete.
II. A zygote is created during this time when the sperm
and egg combine in one of the fallopian tubes.
III. Five to six days after an egg is fertilized
by a sperm, a blastocyst develops.
IV. The female gamete develops in the ovary before
traveling to the Fallopian tube. It will mature into a new
organism if it is fertilized and implant itself in the
uterus.
V. After splitting into two cells, it multiplies into four,
then eight, and so on, doubling the total with each
division.
VI. After fertilization, a process known as cleavage occurs, in
which the massive amount of cytoplasm in the egg is divided
into numerous smaller, nucleated cells through a series of
mitotic divisions.
VII. The gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) procedure
makes use of numerous eggs obtained from the ovaries.
VIII. A germ cell undergoes two
fissions during the meiosis
(reduction division) process,
resulting in the formation of four
gametes. A germ cell undergoes
two fissions during the meiosis
(reduction division) process,
resulting in the formation of four
gametes.
SEXUAL REPRODUCTION
Sexual Reproduction is the process in which new organisms are created, by
combining the genetic information from two individual of different sexes. The
genetic information is carried on chromosomes within the nucleus of
specialized sex cells called gametes. In males, these gametes are called sperm
and in females the gametes are called eggs.
STRUCTURE OF THE
GAMETES
STRUCTURE OF THE SPERM

MATURE SPERM
Spermatozoa

Head - flatted oval shaped

Tail or flagellum - develops during

spermiogenesis

Midpiece - mitochondria become

aligned in a helix around the first
part of the tail
ACROSOME

a gigantic lysosome that forms around

the anterior portion of the nucleus

Have two faces:

the inner acrosomal membrane faces
nucleus
the outer acrosomal membrane is in close
contact with the plasma membrane
STRUCTURE OF THE EGG

SECONDARY OOCYTE

Produce along with the first polar body

arrives in the oviduct is in metaphase of the

second meiotic division cortical granules

final structure feature of the egg that serves

a critical function during fertilization
FERTILIZATION

Fertilization is a complex multi-step process that is

complete in 24 hours. The sperm from a male meets an
ovum from a female and forms a zygote; this is the
point in which pregnancy begins and leads to a 280-
day journey for a female. There are two ways to track
this process, and they differ by the day counting
begins.
