Abstract
The sound framework for process piping stress analysis is the result of experimental research performed over
60 years ago in the 1940s and 1950s. This framework is so robust and well presented that, apart for minor
changes and amendments, it has been successfully employed by process piping engineers since its first
inclusion on the B31 code in 1955. As computational power increases and finite element analysis becomes
accessible for piping engineers, it has become clear that the current framework is not well suited for complex
finite element evaluation of piping. The ASME B&PVC, Section VIII, division 2, was completely rewritten in
2007 and provides rules for the evaluation of pressure vessels by finite element analysis. This paper presents
a comparison of some historical test data that served as basis for the original B31 code framework, against
modern finite element evaluation according to the Design by Analysis rules presented in part 5 of the ASME
B&PVC, Section VIII, division 2.
