The Path of Light

What This Module is About
Light is very important in all aspects of life. The Sun is the main
source of light. It provides energy in order for the plants to make food.
The heat produced by the sun also makes the earth warm. This makes
life will be possible in earth.
Light travels at 186,000 miles (300,000 km) per second. The
speed of light depends on the type of materials it passes through. Light
travels slowly in some materials than others. It goes more slowly in
water than in air.
In this module, you will discover how light travels. Infer that laser
light travels in a straight line and the different uses of laser lights.
Dear Teacher,
This is a self-paced module with various
activities to be done at home by the learners.
Clear and careful instructions must be given
to the learners to ensure safety and avoid
misconceptions in performing the activities.

What I Need to Know
Many scientists have been studying the nature of light. Some say
that light behaves like a wave, while other scientists say that light
behaves like a group of particles.
In the next lesson, you will do the activities that will help you
describe how light travels. You will also be guided with an activity to
evaluate whether light can pass through all in types of materials.
Learning Objectives:
For you to achieve the objectives cited above, you are to do the
following:
• Take your time reading the lessons carefully.

What I Know
Test A
Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and write FALSE if
the statement is wrong.
_______ 1. Light travels faster in air than in water.
_______ 2. Light always travels in a straight line when passing
through a single medium.
_______ 3. Light rays could not be blocked. It can pass through all
types of materials.
_______ 4. Light that strikes a thick cardboard bends and find another
way to pass through it.
_______ 5. The speed of light slows when it travels from one material
to another.
Test B
Direction: Write the letter of your chosen answer.
1. How does laser light travel?
A. curve line C. straight line
B. slant line D. zigzag line
2. How will you describe the size of the laser light? _____
A. average C. narrow
B. big D. wide
3. Laser light can travel _____ distances and still focus on a small
area.
A. average B. long C. near D. short
4. Laser light has a great deal of _____ energy.

Lesson
How Light Travels?
1
Sun is the main source of light. Other common sources of light
are electric bulb, flashlight, and fires. Light helps us see different things
in our environment. Some materials can block the light, and there are
also materials that cannot block the light.
The nature of light made inventors harness it to be used in various
technologies like laser and optical fibers. Laser light has a great deal of
heat energy.
In this module, you will learn more about how light travels and its
uses.

Activity 2
Direction: Look at the picture of a laser and answer the questions
below.
Figure 1. Laser
lights
8
Guide Questions:
1. Based on the drawing, how do you describe the light produced
by laser, is it narrow or wide?
What is It?
Learning Circuit
9
A laser is a narrow but a powerful beam of light. Laser light
travels in a straight line. It can travel long distances and still focus
on a small area.
10
Guide Questions:
1. When can we say that light travels in a straight line?

Have fun!
Material:
flashlight or celfon with flashlight
Direction:
1. Switch on the flashlight.
2. Aim the beam of light towards the wall. Observe the direction
of the light.
3. Place your open palm in front of the flashlight. Observe what
happen to the light.
Figure 5. Flashlight
11
Guide Questions:
1. When you placed your hand in front of the flashlight, can you still
see the beam of light reaching the wall?
2. Did the light bend when you placed your hand in front of the
flashlight?
Brain Buster!
Test 1
Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and write FALSE if
the statement is wrong.

Test 2
Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is correct. If the statement is
wrong, change the underlined word and get your answers
from the box below.
