What This Module is About
Light is very important in all aspects of life. The Sun is the main
source of light. It provides energy in order for the plants to make food.
The heat produced by the sun also makes the earth warm. This makes
life will be possible in earth.
Light travels at 186,000 miles (300,000 km) per second. The
speed of light depends on the type of materials it passes through. Light
travels slowly in some materials than others. It goes more slowly in
water than in air.
In this module, you will discover how light travels. Infer that laser
light travels in a straight line and the different uses of laser lights.

Notes to the Teacher

Dear Teacher,
This is a self-paced module with various
activities to be done at home by the learners.
Clear and careful instructions must be given
to the learners to ensure safety and avoid
misconceptions in performing the activities.

i4
What I Need to Know

Many scientists have been studying the nature of light. Some say
that light behaves like a wave, while other scientists say that light
behaves like a group of particles.
In the next lesson, you will do the activities that will help you
describe how light travels. You will also be guided with an activity to
evaluate whether light can pass through all in types of materials.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

1. Describe how the path of light travels.

2. Infer that laser light travels in a straight line.

Time duration: 4 days

How to Learn from this Module

For you to achieve the objectives cited above, you are to do the
following:
• Take your time reading the lessons carefully.

• Follow the directions and/or instructions in the activities and

exercises diligently.

• Answer all the given tests and exercises.

Lesson
How Light Travels?
1
Sun is the main source of light. Other common sources of light
are electric bulb, flashlight, and fires. Light helps us see different things
in our environment. Some materials can block the light, and there are
also materials that cannot block the light.
The nature of light made inventors harness it to be used in various
technologies like laser and optical fibers. Laser light has a great deal of
heat energy.
In this module, you will learn more about how light travels and its
uses.

What’s In

Direction: Identify what type of heat transfer is shown for some

common activities at home.

conduction convection insulation radiation

_______________ 1. Cooking lechon manok.

_______________ 2. Cooking banana by boiling.
_______________ 3. Drying newly washed clothes in the sun.
_______________ 4. Heating the frying pan.
_______________ 5. Sauna bath (tuob).
_______________ 6. The cover of the cooking pot becomes hot
when cooking.

7
What’s New

Those that give light at home…

Activity 1
Direction: Give at least four things that give light in your house during
day time and during night time.

LIGHTS AT
HOME

Activity 2
Direction: Look at the picture of a laser and answer the questions
below.

Figure 1. Laser
lights

8
Guide Questions:
1. Based on the drawing, how do you describe the light produced
by laser, is it narrow or wide?

2. As shown in the drawing, laser light is focused in the center. Is

it possible to use it to give light to your house at night?

What is It?

Learning Circuit

Figure 2. Path of Light

Light always travels in a straight line when passing through

a single medium or any substance through which a light wave can
pass and travel.
Light can travel even without a medium. It can travel very
fast. Mediums like air, water and transparent glass slow down the
speed of light. Materials like a cardboard, a book, a wood or a
plastic chair or a wall can block the light.
Light does not need air or any media to travel. The light from
the sun can travel in space and reaches Earth.

9
A laser is a narrow but a powerful beam of light. Laser light
travels in a straight line. It can travel long distances and still focus
on a small area.

Figure 1. Laser light Figure 3. Barcode

Characteristics of the light produced by laser:

1. very narrow and precise
 used to store information on CD
 used to read barcodes in stores
 used in printers and scanners
2. it has great deal of heat energy
 used to cut, drill and bond materials together
 used by doctors in surgery without damaging the
surrounding area
 used to treat certain problems with internal organs,
the eyes and the skin.

Figure 4. Use of Laser in Medical Practice

10
Guide Questions:
1. When can we say that light travels in a straight line?

2. What type of materials can block the path of a light?

3. Why does a laser light capable of cutting very hard objects?

What’s More
\

Have fun!

You may work on this activity inside a dark room or during

night time.

Material:
 flashlight or celfon with flashlight
Direction:
1. Switch on the flashlight.
2. Aim the beam of light towards the wall. Observe the direction
of the light.
3. Place your open palm in front of the flashlight. Observe what
happen to the light.

Figure 5. Flashlight

11
Guide Questions:

1. When you placed your hand in front of the flashlight, can you still
see the beam of light reaching the wall?

2. Did the light bend when you placed your hand in front of the
flashlight?

3. Based on your observation, does light travel in a straight line or in

a curved line? Explain your answer.

What I Have Learned

Brain Buster!
Test 1
Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and write FALSE if
the statement is wrong.

1. Light travels faster in air.

2. A one liter of bottle can block the path of light.
3. Light rays can pass through a blackboard eraser.
4. When a light ray strikes a thick cardboard it bends and finds another
way to pass through.
5. Light can travel even without a medium.
