WHAT IS A TISSUE

A tissue is a group of cells, not necessarily identical, but from the same origin, that together carry out
a specific function. These are called tissues because of they are functioning together.

TISSUE STRUCTURE FUNCTION

Thin-walled, immature cells that Make new cells for growth
divide often •Some new cells stay
•Cells tightly packed in layers or rows meristematic
•No intercellular spaces •Some cells differentiate and
•Single large nucleus become permanent tissues
•Dense cytoplasm
•Small or no vacuole

MESISTEMATIC TISSUE
Single layer of tightly packed, thin Forms an outer cover and protect
walled cells plant
•Cover the plant •Controls movement of water out of
•Aerial parts covered with a waxy layer plant
cuticle • Roots absorb water
•Cuticle protects plant
•Cuticle prevents too much water loss
•Often adapted for extra functions,
e.g. Root hairs increase surface area
to absorb water

TISSUE STRUCTURE FUNCTION

Many-sided, thin-walled Store food and water • Allow
cells • Large gases, water
vacuoles • Loosely and substances
packed • to move
Large intercellular throughout the plant
spaces

PARENCHYMA TISSUE
Cell wall thickened at corners of cells Collenchyma cells give flexible
•Cells tightly packed with no support to parts of plant
intercellular spaces

COLLENCHYMA TISSUE
Has three ive cell types: Transports manufactured organic
•sieve tubes food produced through
•companion cells photosynthesis
• parenchyma cells •Takes it from leaves to the rest of
•Has one dead cell type: plant
• sclerenchyma fibres
•Sieve tubes have no nuclei;
Kept alive by companion cells
• Where the sieve tubes meet, walls
form a sieve plate; together, they form a
continuous pipeline

Three types of non-living, empty, tube- Transports water and mineral salts
like cells: (ions)
• vessel elements • Takes substances from roots, up
•tracheid’s stem, to eaves
•sclerenchyma fibres • Give support, strength and
•Living parenchyma cells structure
•Cell walls contain lignin
•Walls of vessels and tracheid’s have
pores called pits
•Patterned secondary thickening: that
are either annular, spiral, pitted
•Vessels have no cross walls forming
tubes
•Tracheid’s and fibres have pointed tips
XYLEM TISSUE with holes are thus perforation plates

SCHERENCHYMA TISSUE

Two types of sclerenchyma: Provide structure and support

• long and slender fibres
• short and irregular sclereids (stone
cells)
• Cell walls thickened evenly with lignin
and strong
