Since the circle is tangent

to x-axis, then r is ¿ to x-axis.
The distance from the center of
the circle to the x-axis or the
length of radius r is 1 unit.

The equation of the circle with center at (3, -1)

Circles on Coordinate Plane

You know from the previous chapter that the set of all points
equidistant from a fixed point is called a circle. The fixed point is called
the center. If the circle is on the Cartesian coordinate plane, the distance
formula will lead us to write an algebraic condition for a circle.

In the figure, if P has coordinates (x, y), using the distance

formula will give us

√( x−0 )2+( y−0)2 =r

√ x2+ y2 = r

Squaring both sides, we get x2 + y2 = r2. Thus, the equation of a circle

with center at (0, 0) and radius r in standard form is x2 + y2 = r2
