1. INTRODUCTION
This Annex presents an assessment of Nam Mo Bailey Bridge Capacity. The assessment is based on
the site investigation report and the drawings which were obtained from on-site measurements. The
concrete compressive strength of main members has been investigated on site.
The existing bailey bridge view, 3D view, its layout and details are shown in Figure 1.1.

The further testing will be included both static and dynamic moving load with AASHTO HS-20 truck,
but limited load to 200 kN (20.4T) only.
1. Static Moving Load – Vehicle AASHTO HS-20 – with total load of 200 kN (20.4 tons)
2. Dynamic Moving Load – Vehicle AASHTO HS-20 – with total load of 200 kN (20.4 tons) and
dynamic allowance of 33%.
The bailey steel bridge is checked for both strength and bridge deflection, in order to determine a new
safe capacity of the bridge.

3. DESIGN CRITERIA
3.1 Codes and Standards
The structures have been designed to the following codes and standards: ASHTO-LRFD -16/ BS-EN
1993-1:2005/NA:2008/A1:2014, Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures.
4. MATERIAL SPECIFICATION
a. Material Strength
Concrete:
Grade C25 – Cylinder compressive strength for Piers and Pier Cap Beam (Investigation Report)
Grade C20 – Cylinder compressive strength for Pile Cap, Abutment (Annex 2)
b. Material Density
Concrete: 25 kN/m3
Steel: 78.5 kN/m3
Soil: 19 kN/m3
Timber (hard wood): 10 kN/m3

Figure 5.1.
3. Dynamic Load – Vehicle AASHTO HS-20 – with total load of 200 kN + Dynamic
allowance of 33% (AASHTO) (27.14 tons), see Figure 5.2.

According to Join Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) Map, a wind speed for Xaysomboun
province is 32.8 m/s @10 meter height.

The 3D model is based on the site visual inspection measurement and material property assessed on site
for RC members, while the steel structural member grade is assessed by analytical method. The
structural software is, considered as powerful tools, used to analyze the bailey bridge structure. To
reflect the structure behavior close to reality, the bridge is modeled in 3D system (Figures 6.1).

7. BOUNDARY CONDITION
Due to the fact that there is no as built drawings available for this study, the boundary support condition
is then based on engineering judgement. From 4 days observation done on site during bridge load test,
there is no settlement of foundation occurred. The foundation is firmly stable. (Figure 7.1). Hence,
pinned support is applied to support the footing/pile cap in order to make the bridge simulation models
in stable condition as per actual bridge condition.

In order to determine the bridge capacity, in this an assessment, there are 2 cases of analysis
are considered:
• Static Load – Vehicle AASHTO HS-20 – with total load of 200 kN (20.4 tons)
• Dynamic Load – Vehicle AASHTO HS-20 – 200 kN load in total with considered a dynamic
allowance of 33% (based on AASHTO) (27.14 tons).

It is observed that some members fail due dynamic load of the truck
HS-20 with 20 tons in total. The end members of the panel lower chord
and some webs that located over the piers (Pier 1 and Pier 2) are found
to have failed and need to be strengthened (See Table 10.2.1 and Figure
10.2.1).
