CALA

COMPONENT E

SUBJECT MATHEMATICS

LEVEL O’LEVEL

CALA TYPE PROBLEM SOLVING

TOPIC ALGEBRA INEQUALITIES

SUBTOPIC LINEAR PROGRAMMING

BACKGROUND

Sometimes we are faced with complex decisions to make. Mathematical skills can be applied to solve such problems.
For example Mr. Ruzani, a poultry farmer keeps chickens and turkeys and wants to sell some of his stock to raise
money to buy some feeds. He wants to sell at least 5 chickens and not more than 8 turkeys. The number of turkeys
he wishes to sell should be equal or more than the number of chickens. A chicken costs $6 and a turkey costs $8. Let
x be the number of chickens and y be the number of turkeys. How many of each does he need to sell to get the
maximum amount?

CONCEPTS

 Inequality formulating
 Drawing inequality graphs
 Use of graphs to make informed decisions
