Thermal Calculation for Mass Concrete
1 Project parameter

1.1 The thickness of SVD T621A/B foundation base is 1.2m (3.94 ft), the maximum
wide is 32m (105 ft), the maximum long is 32.6m (107 ft), and there 5 surfaces will
be exposed to the air during construction. The foundation is an octagon shape.

1.2 The foundation side formwork use wood forms with the thickness1 of 18mm (0.71
in), The insulating effect of 0.71 in. thick wood forms on each face would be to
effectively increase the thickness by 2×0.71×(20)/12 = 2.37 ft (assuming a 1 in.
thick wood form facing is equivalent to 20 in. concrete);

1.3 Summer placing with concrete cooled to 28℃ (82.4F), concrete mixture design for
a specified strength of 35MPa (5075 psi); 372kg cement TypeⅠ (adiabatic curve
same as Fig. 4.1 in ACI 207.2R), 28 kg of micro silica, 140kg of water per m3 (627
lb of cement TypeⅠ, 47.19 lb of micro silica, 236 ld of water per yd3). Details see
concrete trial mix design.

3 Calculation

Determine the temperature change of the concrete that results in thermal

contraction. The basic approach is to determine values for each of the each of the
variables in the following expression

TE = (Tpl + TC+F) –Tmin

TE------ effective temperature change in members including an equivalent

temperature change to compensate for drying shrinkage

Tmin-------- minimum temperature of concrete against earth or rock mass, °F

Tpl -------- the effective placing temperature of fresh concrete

TC+F-------- temperature generated by mixture of Portland cement and pozzolan

EN131528-TCCSA-CS-M04-0003 Rev 02 Page 19 of 29

2.1 Determine the V/S calculated as rectangle shape. Remember that the wood forms
provide an additional 20 in. of equivalent concrete on each vertical face that
should be considered in the volume calculation.

Volume = 3.94× (105 + 0.71×20/12 +0.71× 20/12) ×(107+ 0.71×20/12 +0.71×

20/12)= 46265 ft3

Surface area =3.94 × (107+105)×2+(105×107)= 12906 ft2

V/S = 46265/12906 = 3.58 ft

2.2 Determine the effective placing temperature Tpl:

Establish ambient air temperature for summer placement based on locality. Use of
the average monthly temperature is good in the absence of more specific
information. Assume 31.5℃ (88.7 °F) average temperature;

http://www.weatherforecastmap.com/saudi_arabia/jizan/

From Fig. 4.4 of ACI 207.2R-07, placing temperature is 82.4F, concrete

temperature peaks at 1.5 day.

EN131528-TCCSA-CS-M04-0003 Rev 02 Page 20 of 29

Using Fig. 4.6 of ACI 207.2R-07, the heat absorbed for V/S = 3.58 is
approximately 40%; and The net effective placing temperature Tpl = 82.4 +0.40×
(88.7 – 82.4) = 84.9 °F.

2.3 Determine the final exposure temperature Tmin at 1 week old:

Establish minimum exposure temperature for 1-week duration. Ambient

temperature data is needed for area. For this example, assume that minimum
ambient temperatures are 29℃ (82.4 °F); say the coldest daily temperature see

EN131528-TCCSA-CS-M04-0003 Rev 02 Page 21 of 29

section 2.2;

For final exposure conditions, assume that the foundation keep the forms

V/S = (3.94 × 105) ft3/(105+3.94) ft2 =3.8 ft = 45.6 in. (unit length)

Using Eq.(4-4) of ACI 207.2R-07 to compute heat dissipation, select an earth

temperature appropriate for the region. Say 60 F

Tmin = minimum ambient temperature + 2/3(earth temperature – minimum ambient

temperature) × (V/S/96)0.5

Tmin =84.2 °F + 2/3×(60 – 84.2) × (46/96)0.5 = 73°F.

2.4 Determine the temperature rise of the concrete, TC+F:

From Fig. 4.5 of ACI 207.2R-07, the temperature rise for Type I cement for wet
surface exposure (concrete surface shall be kept wet during concrete curing) and
an effective placing temperature of 84.9 °F and V/S of 3.58 ft = 38 °F ;

Correct for actual cement and micro silica content of actual mixture based on ratio
of cement contents.

Ceq = (627+47.2) lb (372+28kg) according to the trial mix design

TC+F = 38 °F (627+47.2)/ (376) =68.1 °F

EN131528-TCCSA-CS-M04-0003 Rev 02 Page 22 of 29

Temperature of the concrete at the end of 1.5 days = 82.4+ 68.1 =150.5°F =65.8℃
﹤70℃, comply with the design requirements.

4 Comments

Most important thing for mass concrete is control the special heat of cement, but
type Ⅱcement is not available in Jazan of KSA, the maximum concreting placing
temperature shall be controlled to 28℃ as per local Saudi market availability. In
some instances, advantage can be taken of the cement reduction benefit of a
water-reducing admixture. ACI 207.1R, Chapter 2 provides more detailed
discussion of cementations materials commonly used in mass concrete
structures. In this case water-reducing & expanding admixture shall be
added in the mass concrete.

The calculation for maxim temperature meet design requirements so the

mass concrete shall be insulated properly to keep the temperature
difference between concrete surface and centre less than 20 ℃, and should
monitor the concrete temperature during concrete curing, if temperature
difference high should enhance insulation and defer form removing to
control the temperature difference after concrete pouring. The expanding
admixture shall be used to prevent concrete shrinkage and reduce volume
change; It is a common measure for mass concrete construction.

More detail methods statement please refers to Methods statements for

mass concrete.
