This paper analyzed how Language Learning Strategies affected the Academic Performance of the
English majors
To answer this question, the researchers administered one set of questionnaires: the researchers’-
adopted and slightly modified the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) Survey Scale which
will determine the effectiveness of these underlying English Language Learning Strategies which served as
indicators in the given instrument with 30 English majors. The respondents’ grade weight average during
the first semester of A.Y. 2020-2021 was obtained as basis for their academic performance.
Findings revealed that Among the six English Language Learning Strategies, it prevailed that the
Metacognitive strategies were considered the most effective among the majority of English Majors and the
Affective Strategies were the least effective for the respondents. As regards to the level of academic
performance of the respondents of the study, 46.67 % of the respondents attained an outstanding academic
performance which means to say that their average was under the range of 1.1 to 1.5, 40% of the
respondents had a very good performance (1.6-2.0), and the remaining 13.33% of the respondents got good
or satisfactory performance during the first semester. The researchers also find out that there was no
significant relationship between the English Language Learning Strategies and the academic performance of
the respondents.
Through the findings, it could be implied that academic performance was not influenced by
the Language Learning Strategies affecting the English majors.
In the past decade, a growing body of research had focused on language learning strategies.
O’Malley and Chamot (1990) defined learning strategies as special ways in information processing that
enhanced comprehension, learning or retention of information.
HO1: There was no significant relationship between the English Language Learning Strategies of the
respondents and their level of academic performance.
This theory was proposed by Henri Holec and the term learner autonomy was first coined in 1981.
Language Learner Autonomy Theory stated that Learner Autonomy was evident when the learner took
responsibility for his or her learning. Learner autonomy was the (a) ability and willingness to perform a
language task without assistance, with adaptability related to the situational demands, with transferability to
other relevant contexts, and with reflection, accompanied by (b) relevant action (the use, usually conscious
and intentional, of appropriate learning strategies) reflecting both ability and willingness. Learner autonomy
led to greater achievement or proficiency. This situation could be summarized by “five A’s”: Ability,
attitude, + action = autonomy → achievement (Oxford, 1999).
The respondents of the study were the 30 English Majors of De La Salle Andres Soriano Memorial College
respectively in Academic Year 2020-2021.
