1.0 HANDLING AND STORAGE OF PILES

Lift and transport piles after the concrete has attained of least 80% of the design concrete
strength. The method and sequence of lifting, handling, transporting and storing piles shall be
such thot the piles ore not damaged. Only the designed lifting and support points shall be used.
During transport and storage piles shall be stored on adequate support located under the lifting
points of the piles. All piles with in o stock shall be in groups of some length. Pocking of uniform
thickness shall be provided between piles of the lifting points.

2.0 DRIVING OF PILES

2.l Leaders & Trestles

At all stages during driving and until incorporation in the superstructure the pile shall be
adequately supported and restrained by means of leaders, trestles, temporary supports or
other quid arrangements to maintain position and alignment and to prevent buckling.
These arrangements shall be such thot damage to the pile does not occur

2.2 Driving Procedure & Re-drive Checks

Each pile shall be driven continuously until the specified or approved set and/or depth has
been reached, except that S.O. may permit the suspension of driving if he is satisfied that
the rate of penetration prior to the cessation of driving will be substantially re-established
on its resumption or if S.O. is satisfied that the suspension of driving is beyond the control
of Contractor. Contractor shall Inform S.O. without delay if on unexpected change in
driving characteristics is noted. A detailed record of the driving resistance over the full
length of the available pile shall be taken if required. Contractor shall given adequate
notice and provide all facilities to enable S.O. to check driving resistance's. A set shall be
token only in the presence of S.O. unless otherwise approved.

2.3 Final Set

The final set of each pile shall be recorded either as the penetration in millimetres per 10
blows or as the number of blows required to produce o penetration of 300mm. When o
final set is being measured, the following requirements shall be met.
i. The exposed port of the pile shall be in good condition without damage or
distortion.
ii. The dolly and pocking, if any, shall be in sound condition.
iii. The hammer blow shall be in line with the pile axis and the impact surface shall be
flat and of right angles to the pile and hammer axis.
iv. The hammer shall be in good condition and operating correctly.

2.4 Driving Sequence & Risen Piles

Piles shall be driven in an approved sequence to minimize the detrimental effects of
heave and lateral displacement of the ground. When required, levels and measurements
shall be token to determine the movement of the ground or any pile resulting from the
driving process. When o pile has risen as o result of adjacent piles being driven.
Contractor shall submit to S.O his proposals for correcting this and the avoidance of it in
subsequent work.

2.5 Cutting-Off Piles Heads

When the driving of o pile had been approved and if not otherwise specified, the concrete
of the head of the pile shall cut-off to the level specified. The length of splice reinforcing
bars projecting above this level shall be as specified.
Care shall be token to ovoid shattering or otherwise damaging the rest of pile. Any
crocked or defective concrete shall be cut away and made good with new concrete
properly bonded to the old.

3.0 WELDING FOR FILE JOINT

3.1 Workmanship
i) Cleaning
Prior to wielding the groove face and their adjacent areas shall be completely cleaned of
oil, point, oxides, water and all other foreign matter.

ii) Slags, etc

Clusters of surfaces porously, slog, spotter and scale shall be removed by wire brush
and/or grinder. iii) When raining, welding shall not be carried out unless it is approved by
S.O.

4.0 CONSTRUCTION TOLERANCES

4.1 Setting out

Setting out shall be carried out from the control points. Immediately before installation of
the pile, the pile position shall be marked with suitable identification pins or markers.

4.2 Position
For o pile cut-off of or above ground level the maximum permitted deviation of the pile
centre form the centre point shown on the setting out drawing shall be 75mm in any
direction or as specified by S.O.

5.0 RECORDS

5.1 Contractor shall keep o record of each completed pile and furnish o copy to S.O, this
record shall include the information given below.

i. Location of each pile

ii. Materials size and length of piles
iii. Details of equipment, including rammer weight, drop height, particulars of helmets,
cushion, etc.
iv. Number of blows per penetration depth throughout the pile length.
v. The final driving resistance in blows or penetration as specified in Para 2.3.
vi. Actual penetration depth,
vii. Errors in position and inclination of the piles.
viii. Any abnormality whichever occurs.

6.0 CALCULATION OF PILE SET USING HILEY FORMULA

Determination of Driving Set for 150mm x 150 mm RC pile By Dynamic Analysis

6.1 CALCULATION OF PILE SET USING HILEY FORMULA (1 Tonnes Weight)

FORMULA USED: KRUEGER FORMULA

(MODIFICATION OF HIGHLY FORMULA)

F.S x R = EWH x W=1/4P

S = C/2 W+P

1 Type of hammer used : Hydraulic Hammer

2 Weight of Hammer , W : 1 tonnes
3 Drop of Hammer , H : 280 mm
4 Length of pile , P : 30 mm
5 Weight of pile : 0.055t/m. X 30m = 1.65 tonnes
6 Working load of pile, R : 7.5 tonnes
7 Safety Factors , F. S :2
8 Assuming Temporary Compression C : 12mm
9 Final set blow , S :
10 Efficiency of Hammer , E : 0.85

_____________________________________________________________________________
COMPTATION :- S+C/2 = EWH x W+1/4P
F.S.R W+P
= 1462 x 9.35
120 13.4
= 12.18 x 0.07

S+C/2 = 8.50 - 6
= 2.50 mm per Blow
= 25.01 mm per 10 Blows
= 1.0 inch per 10 blows
