Principles of Design

Proportion – it refers to the relative size and scale of the various elements in a design

Balance – it is the concept of visual equilibrium, and relates to our physical sense of balance

Rhythm – repetition of elements can cause a sense of movement

Emphasis or Dominance – it is one method that is used to attract attention to the focal point

Contrast – it happens when two elements are different

Harmony – it is a selection of objects that share a similar trait

Repetition – the repeating of a single element

Unity – the idea of how various elements must work together to make the design look good

Elements of Design

Line and Direction – it is a series of connected points that determine the psychological impact

Shape – it is generally created by 2D shapes

Texture – it is associated with how things look and feel, and refers to surface quality

Colour – it occurs when a light of different wavelengths strike our eyes

Value – it refers to the darkness or the lightness of an area
