Venue:
Office of Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia to the United
Nations AND Virtual Meeting / Webinar
Abstract Background:
Indonesia has committed to reducing GHG emissions through the
ratification of the Paris Agreement reflected in Law no. 16/2016. The Paris
Agreement requires Indonesia to describe and communicate post-2020
climate resilience actions in a Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)
document and submit it to the Secretariat of the United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on Climate Change.
Indonesia's NDC document sets a national GHG emission reduction target
of 29% or the equivalent of 834 million tons of CO2 with their efforts or
up to 41% with adequate international support by 2030.
The NDC target of 29% nationally can be achieved by reducing GHG
emissions by 17.2% in the forestry sector, 11% in the energy sector,
0.32% in the agricultural sector, 0.10% in the industrial sector, and 0.38%
in the waste sector. The emission reduction target of 29% with their
efforts will be carried out with the central government, regional
governments, the private sector, and state-owned enterprises. The
implementation plan of emission reduction activities in achieving this NDC
needs to be strengthened, especially for the funding model, which will be
described in the next chapter.
Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) and Energy sectors are the biggest
contributors to GHG emission reduction in Indonesia, with more than 90%
of total contribution. In order to achieve this GHG emission reduction
target, the Government of Indonesia realizes that support from all
stakeholders is very important.
Furthermore, Indonesia also realizes that the FOLU sector would have the
most significant contribution to the global GHG emission reduction efforts,
contributed from various types of forests, either tropical countries or sub-
tropical countries. Foresters around the world need to strengthen their
partnership and collaboration. The world needs stronger commitments
from foresters in developed and developing countries.
Forests provide an important carbon (C) sink countering increasing
greenhouse gas emissions. Forest management practices could influence
C uptake and storage in woody biomass and soils. The tradeoff between
carbon and timber values in improved forest management represents an
evolving context in which probabilistic simulation may serve as a decision
supporting tool for managers who make decisions about harvesting and
planting cycles and intensity.
The forestry sector in developed countries, with their long history and
experiences in managing forests should share their knowledge with those
foresters in developing countries, with additional support from multilateral
organizations for financial or technical assistance.
In this regard and to amplify the foresters’ efforts to tackle climate change
and in conjunction with UNFF17 Agenda, particularly Agenda 3. Policy
discussions on the implementation of the United Nations strategic plan for
forests 2017–2030; (v) Interlinkages between the global forest goals and
targets and the Sustainable Development Goals under review by the high-
level political forum on sustainable development in 2022 and international
forest-related developments, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry
Republic of Indonesia, Permanent Mission of Republic of Indonesia to the
United Nations, New York, and The Association of Indonesian Forest
Concessionaires (APHI) will organize a side event session titled “Forestry
and Other Land Use (FOLU) Contribution to GHG Emission
Reduction”.
II. Objectives
The objective of this side event:
● Promoting forestry sector programme and initiatives to reducing
the GHG emissions;
● Promoting multi-stakeholder partnerships in the forestry sector
development.
● Exploring international collaboration in the forestry sector to
support the reduction of GHG emission’s program
III. Date and Venue
The UNFF17 Side Event
“Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) Contribution to GHG
Emission Reduction” will be held tentatively on Monday, 9 May 2022 at
the United Nation Headquarter building in New York, US.
