Topic CLIMATE

Grade Level/ Sections Grade 9/ RUTHERFORD, TESLA, DALTON, PERKIN

Date and Time Allotment TUESDAY – THURSDAY
Pre- service Teacher FEBEE JANE D. DAYONDON
I. OBJECTIVE/S At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
1. Describe the impact of climate change and lessen its effect; and
2. Differentiate El Niño from La Niña

Content Standard The learners demonstrate understanding of factors that affect climate, and
the effects of changing climate and how to adapt accordingly

Performance Standard
The learners should be able to participate in activities that reduce risks and
lessen effects of climate change
Learning Competencies/
Objectives with LC code Describe certain climatic phenomena that occur on a global level (S9ES -IIIf
– 31)

II. CONTENT Climate Change

III. LEARNING
RESOURCES
A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide Science 9 Teacher’s Guide, Lisa A. Alvarez, et. al.
2. Learners’ Material Science 9 Learners’ Material, Lisa A. Alvarez, et. al.
3. Internet Sources
B. Other Learning Resources Kidapawan City Division Science 9 Simplified Self- Learning Module (SSLM)

IV. PROCEDURE TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES LEARNERS’ ACTIVITIES/

RESPONSES
1. ELICIT: A. Reviewing previous lessons or presenting new lessons
Ask the students with the following questions:
 What is climate change? -is a long-term change in
 What are the causes of climate change? the average weather
patterns that have come to
define Earth’s local,
regional and global
climates

2. ENGAGE: B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

Picture Analysis

Picture Reveal
Let's play some games! To show a portion of the picture, you simply need to
choose some numbers.
 Drought

 Melting of glaciers

 The burning of
fossil fuels

 deforestation

3. EXPLORE: C. Presenting examples/ instances of the new lesson

 What do the pictures have in common?  Impact of climate

 What climatic phenomena you can derive from the pictures? change

4. EXPLAIN: D. Discussing new concepts/practicing skills

I will let the learners read the material provided in the module
about the Impact of Climate Change and El Niño and La
Niña. Let them take down notes on important points that
could be used later in the discussion.

 Discuss the topic through slide decks.

 Guide questions for the discussion:

 What is El Niño? - Is an abnormal and
lengthy warming in
the eastern part of
 What are the characteristics of El Niño? the Pacific Ocean
- Extreme climatic
 What causes El Niño? conditions; extreme
temperature rise
 What is La Niña? with a little
rainfall, and at the
 What are the characteristics of La Niña? opposite extreme,
there is unusually
 What causes La Niña? heavy rainfall.

- El Niño condition
occurs when
surface water in the
equatorial Pacific
becomes warmer
than average and
east winds blow
weaker than
normal.

- La Niña has the

opposite effect of
El Niño. During La
Niña events, trade
winds are even
stronger than usual,
pushing more
warm water toward
Asia. Off the west
coast of the
Americas,
upwelling
increases, bringing
cold, nutrient-rich
water to the surface

- Winter
temperatures are
warmer than
normal in the South
and cooler than
normal in the
North.

- La Niña occurs
when equatorial
trade winds
become stronger,
changing ocean
surface currents
and drawing cooler
deep water up from
below.

5. ELABORATE: E. Developing mastery (Leads to formative assessment)

Let the students make a Venn Diagram differentiating El Niño and La -

Niña phenomena.
Compare and Contrast
 How are they different?
How are they the same?
 How are we adapting to the impacts of climate change?

(Possible answers: wearing of cooler clothes to combat heat

during summer, creating in-door activities during extreme heat
days, building houses in higher grounds especially in areas prone
to flood)

6. EVALUATE:

Answer the following questions briefly.

1. What are the two climatic phenomena that we encounter? 1. El Niño and La
2. What is the phenomenon that we encounter when there is a lengthy warming in Niña phenomena
the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean? 2. El Niño
3. What is the phenomenon that we encounter when there is unusual cooling of phenomenon
water in the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean? 3. La Niña
4. What are the shared characteristics of El Niño and La Niña phenomena? phenomenon
5. Why is it important to take actions against climate change? 4. El Niño and La
Niña phenomena
are both Pacific-
Ocean
Atmospheric
Systems.
5. Answers may vary.

7. EXTEND:
In a ½ crosswise describe the impacts of climate change to people, animals,
and environment.
