PART I: PROBLEM SOLVING / ESSAY
Read each problem carefully. Show all your solutions. The grade you get depends on your solution even when you write down the
correct answer. BOX your final answer. [30]

1. Find the heat needed to increase the temperature to 39.2 oC of a 24 kg child from a normal temperature of 37.4 oC. (Assuming that
the human body is mostly water)

2. Calculate the volume of the syringe that contains exactly 1 mole of an ideal gas at STP.

3. One gram of water turns into 1671 cm3 of steam when boiled at normal atmospheric pressure. If the heat of vaporization of water
at this pressure is 2.256 x 106 J/kg. Calculate the work done to turn one gram of water to steam.

4. Find the change in entropy of 1kg of ice that was melted at 0oC and converted back to water. The heat of fusion of water is 3.34 x
105 J/kg.

5. What is the Second Law of Thermodynamics and how does it relate to entropy?
-The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that in any spontaneous process, the total entropy of the system and its
surroundings always increases, or at best remains constant. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that the state of entropy of
the entire universe, as an isolated system, will always increase over time. The second law also states that the changes in the entropy
in the universe can never be negative.

What is the Carnot cycle and how does it relate to the efficiency of heat engines?
- The Carnot cycle is a theoretical cycle that describes the maximum possible efficiency of a heat engine operating between
two temperatures, and it relates to the reversibility of the process. The Carnot cycle has the greatest efficiency possible of an engine
(although other cycles have the same efficiency) based on the assumption of the absence of incidental wasteful processes such as
friction, and the assumption of no conduction of heat between different parts of the engine at different temperatures.
