STANDARDIZED SPECIFICATION
for
LC : CABLE DUCTS
I. SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers the supply and the laying and bedding in trenches of pipes as ducts for the
protection of telephone and electric power cables.
2. INTEKPRETATIONS
2. I SUPPOKTING SPECIFICATIONS. Where this specification is required for a project, the following specifications
shall, inter alia, form part of the contract document:
a) Project specification;
b) SABS 1200 A or SABS 1200 AA, as applicable;
c) SABS 1200 C, if relevant;
d) SABS 1200 D;
e) SABS 1200 DB.
2.2 APPLICATION. T h i s specification contains clauses that are generally applicable to cable ducts.
Interpretations of and variations to this specification are set out in Portion 2 of the project
specification which precedes this specification in a contract document.
2.3 DEFINITIONS. For the purposes of this specification the definitions given in the applicable of the
specifications listed in 2.I(b)-(e) and the following definitions shall apply:
-
Duct. A pipe, generally of diameter up to 150 mm, through which one or more cables are to be laid.
Nest (or batch) (of ducts). Two or more ducts laid parallel to one another in a regular pattern in the
same trench.
2.4 ABBREVIATIONS. For the purposes of this specification the abbreviations given in the applicable of the
specifications listed in 2.I(b)-(e) and the following abbreviations shall apply:
ESCOM or ESC : Electricity Supply Commission
GPO : Department of Posts and Telecomnunications
PI : Plasticity Index
3. MATERIALS
3. I DUCTS. Except that the GPO will supply all pipes for cable ducts required for GPO purposes, the
Contractor shall provide all pipes for cable ducts of the type(s) and class(es) specified in the
project specification, or scheduled, or shown on the drawings, and pipes provided by the Contractor
shall comply with
a) SABS 921 in the case of pitch-impregnated fibre pipes (see 5.7);
b) SABS 791 in the case of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride pipes;
c) SABS 286, SABS 819, or SABS 946, or they shall be of Class T cable conduit pipes, in the case of
asbestos cement pipes; and
d) SABS 559 in the case of vitrified clay pipes.
Joints for ducts shall be rubber jointing sleeves or sleeve-type couplings, as scheduled.
3.2 BEDDING
3.2.1 Electricity Supply Cable Ducts. Material for use in bedding electricity supply cable ducts shall be a
selected soil of a granular nature that has a PI not exceeding 6 and that is free from vegetation and
from lumps and stones of diameter exceeding 15 mm.
3.2.2 Telephone Cable Ducts. Material for bedding telephone cable ducts shall be selected granular material
a s specified in 3 . 2 . 1 or crusher run graded from 13.2 mm to dust.
In addition, in the case of telephone cable ducts of internal diameter greater than 75 mm, the material
shall have a compactibility factor not exceeding 0,2.
3.3 BACKFILL. Material excavated from a trench may be used as backfill, provided that it contains no
rubble or other debris, that it excludes stone of average dimension greater than 150 mn, and that it
can be placed without significant voids and be compacted to at least 90 X modified AASHTO maximum
density.
3.4 CABLE DUCT MARKERS. Temporary and permanent markers for cable ducts shall comply with the relevant
requirements of the project specification.
4. PLANT
4.1 EXCAVATION EQUIPMENT. Excavations nay be carried out with any plant capable of fulfilling the
requirements in regard to trench width and depth.
4.2 TAMPING TOOL. Where more than one duct is to be laid in the same trench, the Contractor shall provide
and use a T-shaped tamper consisting of a mild steel rod of diameter approximately 37 mn and of length
approximately 300 mn with a metal rod for a handle of diameter approximately 20 nun and of length
approximately I 350 mm. or a similar approved tool.
