The external walk around is primarily a visual

check to ensure the overall condition of the

airplane and its visible components and equipment

are safe for flight.

page, depicts the location of the aircraft

components being inspected.

Starting just forward of the passenger door on the left side of the fuselage,
inspect the passenger door emergency light to ensure no cracks are in the
lens and there is no condensation in the light.

Check the condition of the alternate static port (S3) to ensure


there is no damage.

The AOA vane must be checked for damage and the drain port
must also be clear of any debris.

The P3 alternate pitot tube needs to be clear of any debris, with no


excessive erosion on the tip, and must not be damaged.
A bluish coloration of the pitot static tubes is a normal result of heating.

The ice detector probe must be checked to ensure there is no


damage and that it is in good condition.

The P1S1-2 pitot-static tube needs to be clear of any debris, with no


excessive erosion on the tip, and must not be damaged.

Ensure all latches are closed and locked.

the windshields and side
windows for cleanliness,
cracks, or delamination.

serviceable condition.

Ensure all pitot-static tube covers are removed
before engine starts or probes are turned on.

If the nose door is in the open position, confirm the nose door switch
on the external AC panel is in the “open” position. Contact
maintenance before hydraulic pressure is applied to the aircraft.

NOTE
All tires should be inspected for evidence of bulges,
cuts, bruises, embedded foreign objects, excessive wear,
and under inflation.
Maximum tread wear allowed is to the bottom of the
tread (NO CORD SHOWING). If you are unable to
determine whether the tire wear has exceeded the limit,
the captain will contact Maintenance Control and have
the tire inspected by a qualified mechanic before flight.

Intermediate External Walk Around


During intermediate stops, a full preflight is not required.
However, at a minimum the airplane and its visible
components must be checked for the following:

 Proximate area is free of potential FOD items

 Passenger walkway and boarding stairs are safe and clear

 Flight control surfaces are unobstructed and free from ice,


frost, or snow
 All vents, ports, intakes, and exhausts are unobstructed
 Tire condition and pressure are acceptable
 All covers, plugs, picket/mooring lines are removed

 Pay particular attention to any evidence of fluid leaks from


components, drains, panels and airplane skin

 Condition of skin (visible damage) on radome section

 Fuselage, wings, nacelles, pylons and empennage


 All access panels and doors not actually involved in
maintenance are secured
 Pitot-static probes for evidence of freezing, severe

Post flight External Walk Around

The post flight is conducted in a manner similar to the

intermediate walk around inspection. A thorough post

flight is an essential tool for on time operation of the

following flight.
