CHEMICAL REACTIONS
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Most Essential Learning Competency: Apply the principles of conservation of mass to chemical reactions.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

KEY CONCEPTS:
• For a chemical equation to conform to the Law of Conservation of Mass, it must be balanced.
• Chemical equations are balanced by placing the appropriate coefficients before the symbols or
formulas of reactants and products.
• Certain steps are observed in balancing reactions.

Steps in Balancing Equations:

Write the unbalanced chemical equation, make sure you have correctly followed the rules in
writing formulas of compounds.
• Take note of the elements present in the reactant and product side.
• Count the number of atom/s of each element present in the reactant and product side.
• Apply the Law of Conservation of Mass to get the same number of atoms of every
element on each side of the equation.
• Balance chemical equations by placing the appropriate coefficients before the symbol or
formula.
• DO NOT change the subscripts of the formula to balance the equation as it will change
the identity of the components.

Performance Task No. 2

Paper Clip Reaction Model

Objective: To balance chemical equation.

Materials:
• 1 box of different colored paper clips • Periodic table
• Long Folder • Scotch tape/Glue
• Colored paper • Pentel pen

Procedure:
1. Sort out your paper clips according to color. Designate a color for each element. Write a
legend on your work.
2. By connecting paper clips together make model representations for these molecules.
3. You will be working on balancing only ONE
chemical equation. Choose any given equations in
written form work no. 3.
4. Write the corresponding coefficients in the
chemical equation. Like the given example below.
5. Paste your output in a long folder.
