EFFECTIVENESS OF CLASSROOM REWARD SYSTEM IN THE ABSENTEEISM OF

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GRADE 3 PUPILS IN DUMALINAO REGIONAL PILOT

SCHOOL

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

When it comes to academic growth and accomplishment, student attendance was a

crucial determinant. When kids were absent from school frequently, they missed classes and

curricular content that were critical to their academic and social development. The instructor had

to spend time away from regular classroom instruction and routine to catch up on educational

material that the absent student had missed. When pupils were missing from school, the entire

educational process was disturbed for both the absent student and the students who were not

absent. It considered that the student's frequent absences from school were detrimental to his or

her overall academic progress. Furthermore, studies showed that chronic absenteeism led to

juvenile delinquent behavior, low social economic status, unemployment, martial difficulties,

poor health status and adult criminal behavior (Baker, 2000; Ford & Sutphen, 1996).

Absenteeism was an ongoing major problem in the public-school systems (Ford & Sutphen,

1996; Sheats & Dunkleberger, 2001). School leaders continued to search for innovative ways to

get students to attend school regularly. This research will provide the reader with information

about the impact of the classroom reward system on student absenteeism as well as methods to

avoid absenteeism. Our group want to investigate the impact of a classroom incentive system on
7

student absenteeism. We chose this issue as the major focus of our research since we are training

to be teachers and future educators, and we want to understand the repercussions of it happening,

particularly on children.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

This research will seek to answer the following problems:

1. What is the level of effectiveness of classroom reward system in the absenteeism of

Grade 3 Pupils in Dumalinao Regional Pilot School?

2. What are the solutions to prevent the absenteeism?

1.3 Hypothesis of the Study

There was no significant relationship between absenteeism and academic success, learning

environment, learning behavior, or gender.

1.4 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

8

The research focuses on the effectiveness of a classroom reward system in reducing absenteeism

among Grade 3 primary school students at the Dumalinao Regional Pilot School. The researchers

picked ten (10) Grade 3 students as respondents. The student respondents' profile factors

included: (a) age, (b) gender, and (c) grade level.

1.5 Significance of the Study

Another method for motivating pupils to engage in class activities and reduce absenteeism at the

Dumalinao Regional Pilot School is the use of a rewarding system. As a result, the following

stakeholders deemed this study important for the following reasons: To the pupils, the

respondents are the focus of the study since they will be encouraged to attend class as a result of

the teacher-rewarding system. This study informs them that they must be aware that the

awarding system has a significant influence on students' attendance in class. To the researchers,

they are very satisfied with the procedure and conclusion of this study since they already know

the influence of the rewarding system on the kids of the Elementary learners in Dumalinao

Regional Pilot School.

1.6 Definition of Terms

The concepts mentioned below were operationally defined in relation to their use in this study.

According to the study of Michael A. Clores, school absenteeism is an alarming

problem for administrators, teachers, parents, and the society, in general, as well as for

the students, in particular. It may indicate low performance of teachers, students’

dissatisfaction of the school’s services, or lack of or poor academic and non-academic

structures or policies that address the problems or factors influencing or reinforcing this

behavior. Parents are financially burdened for having their children to stay longer in the

school, having to re-enroll them in subjects where they fail due to excessive absences.

The present study aimed to explore the process by which the phenomenon of school

absenteeism evolves or is experienced by the college students. In-depth interviews of ten

absentee students and the use of editing style analysis and a method described by Colaizzi
10

(1978) yielded three category schemes of experience of school absenteeism: (a)

disempowering circumstances - feeling of helplessness; (b) misguided value system -

mixed up priorities; and (c) pedagogical dilemmas – unappealing academic

environments. Based on the findings, the pedagogical, psychological and socio-cultural

implications are discussed.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

2.1 Related Studies

According to Michael A. Clores' research, school absenteeism is a serious problem for

administrators, teachers, parents, and society in general, as well as for children in particular. It

might be due to poor teacher performance, student discontent with school services, or a lack of or

bad academic and non-academic structures or policies that address the problems or causes

affecting or encouraging this behavior. Parents are financially burdened for having their children

stay in school longer, having to re-enroll them in subjects where they fail owing to repeated

absences. The current study sought to investigate the mechanism by which the phenomena of

school absence emerge or is experienced by college students. In-depth interviews with ten

absentee students, as well as the use of editing style analysis and a method described by Colaizzi

(1978), produced three categories of school absenteeism experience: (a) disempowering

circumstances - feeling of helplessness; (b) misguided value system - mixed up priorities; and (c)

pedagogical dilemmas - unappealing academic environments. The educational, psychological,

and socio-cultural consequences of the findings are examined.

Lori Kay Baranek did a review of literature to assess the influence of incentives on intrinsic

motivation and learning for children in general education and special education. Intrinsically

driven children excel in school because they exhibit behaviors such as choosing hard things and

devoting more time to them. The use of incentives reduces intrinsic motivation, resulting in

slower skill acquisition and more mistakes in the learning process. The research's ramifications

are examined, and a set of solutions meant to boost intrinsic motivation is offered. One section of

the collection offers methods for all students, while the other section contains strategies for kids

with learning impairments. Each section is divided into issues such as classroom atmosphere,

conduct, and so on management, and lesson planning.

Absenteeism in school, according to Joel Obrador, is the tendency of not attending lessons

without offering a true or any explanation. It is a truancy behavior that has a detrimental impact

on student achievement. According to Merriam-Webster, absenteeism refers to prolonged

absence. It is the persistent or purposeful neglect to attend school in the setting of school. It is

unavoidable that children may occasionally miss some school events and courses. However, it

becomes an issue if the student is absent from school for an extended period of time. Regular

attendance at school is critical for a student's education and social skills. Chronic absentee pupils

are socially and intellectually disadvantaged. They miss out on important periods of social

contact and growth with their classmates, which has a detrimental influence on their academic

advancement. This can lead to low self-esteem, social isolation, and discontent, all of which may

have contributed to non-attendance in the first place. School absenteeism is a serious concern for

administrators, teachers, parents, and society in general, as well as for students in particular &

Unaccepted absence has a bad impact on peer relationships, which may lead to absence.

According to some experts, the repercussions of absence on children include academic

underachievement, trouble forming friends, which can lead to boredom, and loss of confidence.

Furthermore, prolonged absence can have long-term negative consequences for the child.

Students who are absent from school have a higher chance of dropping out early. Absenteeism in

students has an impact on their academic performance, particularly when they are working in a

group or team for their assignments and projects, because grouping helps build the students'

collaboration and capacity to share and learn knowledge from their peers.

METHODOLOGY

3. 1 Research Locale

The study took place at Dumalinao Regional Pilot School since the respondents were from the

school's Elementary Dumalinao Regional Pilot School.

3.2 Research Instrument

14

Data was gathered is through a questionnaire. The questionnaire is divided into two parts: the

first is a survey of the respondents, and the second is composed of items that determined the

efficiency of the classroom reward system in reducing absenteeism at the Elementary Dumalinao

Regional Pilot School.

3.3 Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers first get the required permissions to conduct research and distribute

questionnaires before beginning to collect the study's primary data. After obtaining the

permission, the researchers orientated the respondents and handed the surveys, which were

promptly recovered. The study tools were directly administered to the respondents by the

researchers. To avoid hurried answers, respondents were given 20 minutes to complete the

forms.

Following the completion of the questionnaires, the data were tallied and tabulated. These data

serve as the foundation for analysis and interpretation.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter includes the researchers' results, analysis, and interpretation of data

acquired about the (1) Profile of the Elementary Dumalinao Regional Pilot School, and (2) The

Level of Effectiveness of the Classroom Reward.

Elementary Dumalinao Regional Pilot School students observed the system.

Table 1. (Pupil’s age Distribution)

16

As seen in Table 1. (50 or 50%) of responses are (13-15 years old), which has the

greatest frequency and percentage across all age groups, while (19-21) years old have the lowest

frequency of (5 or 5%.)

This is an expected outcome given the average age of Elementary Dumalinao Regional Pilot

School pupils ranged from (13 to 21) years old, and the majority of students accepted in Grade 3

were between the ages of (13 and 15).

Table 2. (Pupil’s sex)

Sex Frequencies Percentage

Total: %

Sex.

The data reveals that the majority of pupils are girls (62% or 62), with only (38% or 38)

being boys. This means that girls outnumber boys at the Elementary Dumalinao Regional Pilot

School. According to Abarabar et al. (2013), the majority of pupils in public schools in the

Philippines are females.

Table 4 shows that the overall average is between (4.21 and 5), indicating that respondents in

Grade 3 firmly agree on the classroom incentive system, especially if it is a positive reward.

The general average is calculated using the following formula:

WM = ∑ FX / N

Where:

 WM = Weighted Mean

 ∑ = Summation

 F = No. of Responses

 X = Point Values

 N = No. of Respondents

The ratings of each classroom incentive were determined using a five-point Likert Scale.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS.

This chapter presents the findings, conclusions, and the formulated recommendations

based on the results presented.

Summary of Findings

Based on the gathered data that were tabulated and interpreted in the Grade 3 Tandang

Zora section, the researcher was able to come up with the following significant findings of this

study.
22

1. Out of 10 respondents, (25) in Grade 3 strongly agreed on granting extra points for quizzes

and examinations.

2. Out of 10 respondents, (15) in Grade 3 respondents strongly agree that more points for

performance should be awarded.

3. Out of 10 respondents, (10) Grade 3, (20) strongly agreed that if a kid has ten consecutive

absences, he or she will be dropped.

4. Out of 10 respondents, (15) in Grade 3 strongly agreed with awarding awards to those with

perfect attendance at the end of the school year.

5. Out of 10 respondents, (10) in Grade 3 respondents highly agreed on offering money for

attending class.

6. Out of 10 respondents, (18) Grade 3 highly agreed with the reward of the teacher writing great

on the student's work.

7. Out of 10 respondents, (25) in Grade 3 highly agreed with the benefit of presenting the kids'

accomplishments/achievements inside the classroom.

8. Out of 10 respondents, (23) Grade 3 highly agreed with giving a bag of school supplies as a

reward for perfect attendance.

9. Out of 10 respondents, (19) Grade 3 respondents strongly agreed that their classmate who has

perfect attendance would be the classroom leader as a reward.

23

Conclusions

In this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a classroom reward system in

reducing absenteeism at Elementary Dumalinao Regional Pilot School, as well as measures to

avoid absenteeism. Existing research shows that positive incentives can promote attendance, and

attendance is associated to other aspects of education such as accomplishment, standardized test

scores, peer affiliation, and encouragement of hazardous behaviors. Excessive student

absenteeism can have long-term consequences for pupils, including a negative influence on

future career possibilities when they finish school.

This study discovered that reducing student absenteeism is a job that will require all

stakeholders to work together to find a solution. The school, community, and family must

address the underlying support or signals that validate student attendance. According to research,

the process of retaining children in school is a multifaceted one that involves more than one

institution. Dumalinao Regional Pilot School will need to bring in all resources and make sure to

consistently explain and restate the benefits of keeping students in school where they may

continue to develop, learn, and find success in order to be successful.
