Determination of Compressive Strength of Cylindrical Concrete Specimen

By breaking a cylindrical or cubical concrete specimen with defined dimensions
in a compression testing equipment, the compressive strength is determined. Although
the compressive strength of concrete is immediately shown on the UTM, it is computed
by dividing the failure load by the cross-sectional area that is resisting the load and
reported in MPa (SI) units.

The compressive strength of cylindrical concrete specimens like molded

cylinders and drilled cores is measured according to ASTM C39. Only concrete with a
unit weight greater than 50 lb/ft3 (800 kg/m3) is allowed to use it.

Molded cylinders or cores are subjected to a compressive axial load till failure. By
dividing the greatest force attained during the test by the specimen's cross-sectional
area, the compressive strength of the specimen is determined. The outcomes of this
test procedure serve as the foundation for concrete quality control.

Therefore, the conclusion stated in the report is successful since the

compressive strength, after putting the concrete specimen in the machine produced one
of the common cylinder fracture types. But if it creates a more complex fracture after
putting it in the machine for the compressive strength, therefore it failed the test and the
cylindrical concrete specimen is not in its best shape and structure.
