WELCOME TO THE DORK SIDE!

ts time for San Diego Comic-Con 2011 and an all-new Survival Guide from your friendly neighborhood Clickers! As passionate online publicists, we spend all year putting our expertise to work for our clients. When we realized that not every working attendee at Comic-Con loves it as much as we do, we embraced our roles as geek advocates and created this Survival Guide. Now in its fourth year, this labor of love shares with you all the shiny things were looking forward to in the next year of entertainment and hope to see glimpses of at the Con. What started as a simple How-To guide has grown into a tool somewhat closer to the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, where one can learn what a Dredd or a Felicia Day is, see why people are stoked to visit Nerd HQ or Shatnerpalooza and maybe even pick up a few new vocabulary words and terms from our Geek Speak lexicon. So please, sit back, enjoy and who knows? We could be chanting One of us! One of us! (p. 22) before youre through. Now for the OBLIGATORY DISCLAIMER: All of the information and images we used were found online and assembled purely for entertainment purposes. That said, not all information found on the Internet is always 100% reliable (shocking, but true). Also, dates change, actors drop out, directors take on too many projects, writers goinsane. Its a crazy, mixed-up, unpredictable world we live in. Since we all know that, no one reading this guide should take any of the information in here as locked-in gospel or anything. Its just a little something fun we put together for your information and our entertainment. Okay? Okay. Now toss this into your bag and go have fun! Well see you there! STAR WARS VS. STAR TREK

First of all, this is not an assessment of which space-based franchise is superior . If you want to get into that argument, just walk out on the Comic-Con floor, state a preference for one over the other, and steel yourself for the ensuing battle. No, this is just a quick breakout of the differences between the two so you dont accidentally find yourself speaking Klingon to a Wookie (how embarrassing).

COMic-con survival tips & tricks

If youve never been to the Con before, buckle up-its going to be a bumpy ride. Here are a few of Clicks insider tips on how to enjoy your time to the fullest.
DRESS FOR FUN AND COMFORT

HOW TO SPEAK GEEK

42 - The answer to Life, the Universe and Everything. The answer is a result of a poorly phrased question from The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. All your base are belong to us. - This popular saying originated from poorly translated Japanese in the 8-bit video game, Zero Wing. It is often used to declare ownership of an opponents domaineither in game, or out. And knowing is half the battle. - Following each episode of the popular G.I. Joe cartoon, foolish children learned safety tips concerning paint fumes, live electrical wires and fire. We never learned what the other half of the battle was, though. Big Bad - Coming from the Buffyverse, this describes the biggest villain a hero has to deal with during a given story arc or season. Usually many Little and Medium Bads are dispatched and destroyed before a final showdown with the Big Bad. Bizarro - Originally the name of a flawed Superman clone that does the opposite of everything he says, Bizarro has become an adjective to describe anything that uses twisted logic as well as people and things from alternate universes. Contra Code - Also known as the Konami Code, this not-so-secret gaming cheat code goes: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start. Next step, creating the dance moves to accompany it. Cosplay - Dressing up as your favorite fictional characters, usually with extremely detailed costumes. This practice tends to lean heavily into Japanese anime, though you will see it across all mediums on the ComicCon floor Also extends into crossplay, where fans . dress up as characters of the opposite sex.

When it comes to what you wear at Comic-Con pretty much anything goes, so embrace it, let your freak flag fly, and have fun! Just remember to wear comfortable shoes for those hikes around the hall.

COMIC-CON 2011 SURVIVAL GUIDE

HOW TO SPEAK GEEK

Dont cross the streams. - Originating in the film Ghostbusters when the team crossed their particle beams to eliminate Gozer, this quote is now generally used by men having to urinate together in close quarters. Dont Panic - This phrase lives on the cover of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy in an effort to keep intergalactic travelers from, well, panicking. Enter the Carousel - In the cult sci-fi film Logans Run, everyone has a crystal in the palm of their hands that indicates their age. When they turn 30 on their Lastday, the crystals turn red and flash, and they enter a giant machine called the Carousel, where theyre recycled into a newborn. But not really. Really, it was just murder . Excelsior! - Marvel legend Stan Lee uses this catchphrase to end his correspondence with his loyal readers or, as he called them, true believers. While this would typically appear at the back of Marvel comics, he has used it in public appearances as well. Fanboy - A guy who loves a subject matter purely for the sake of loving it, regardless of the quality. Fangirls are less common, but no less fanatic. Ahem, Twihards. Frak/Frell - As one might surmise, the dictionary definition falls under the FCCs list of nonos. Lest we be fined, well just say it has a few less letters than fire truck. These intergalactic F-bombs are frequently used in Battlestar Galactica and Farscape, respectively. FTW - For the Win!

HOW TO SPEAK GEEK

Game over, man! Game over - Uttered by the great Bill Paxton . in Aliens, his braggart character panics after their encounter with the vicious aliens that maul their team. This phrase was, of course, surrounded by various expletives as well. Aliens with multiple teeth, spiked tails and acid for blood tend to pull that reaction. Han shot first - When George Lucas re-released Star Wars: A New Hope with new effects and deleted scenes in 1997, he changed a fundamental element of the character of Han Solo. In the original version, Han kills Greedo in the cantina in the middle of a conversation, thus cementing his bad-ass status in the hearts and minds of millions. In the re-release, Greedo fires first, making Hans kill simply self-defense. But really, Han shot first. I got better - From Monty Python and the Holy Grail to the Death of Superman, favorite characters are always returning from serious injury or death at some point or another When asked, I thought you . were dead! we typically get the response, I got better . Kneel Before Zod! - Often quoted by someone claiming dominance, this quote was spoken by Terrence Stamp in Superman II. LARPers - Live Action Role Players. This is Cosplay with purpose. Missions, quests, battles and challenges, all set in the real world and performed in character Warning: may be armed with actual weapons. . Legion of Doom - A cabal of ultimate villainy, originally comprised of the Super Friends greatest foes: Lex Luthor, Bizarro, Black Manta, Captain Cold and more. Mind Meld - A Vulcan telepathy skill from Star Trek. This form of telepathy must be done through touch and works on humans as well as Vulcans. And, um, humpback whales. MMORPG - Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. For people who really like to play games with lots of people, but not actually be in the same room with them. A place where you can virtually travel the world, meet new people, and kill them.
