Paint Preparation :
Unlike the manufacture of conventional emulsion paints, there is no grinding or high-speed dispersion
operation in the manufacture of Road Marking Paints. What is typically required is a low speed, low
shear operation with a slight vortex. This procedure is necessary to avoid excessive heat build-up in the
paint during the mixing stage, which otherwise may result in skinning of the paint due to the heat & loss
of ammonia. Due to the nature of the application & high applied film thickness, the pigment & extender
dispersion fineness does not need to be above 3 on the Hegmann gauge (i.e. below 60 – 70 microns).
Use only ammonia to adjust the pH of the paint. Do not use less volatile amines or nonvolatile base.
Excessive foam in the paint will increase the apparent viscosity and lead to problems with gel formation.
It is important to avoid silicone-based defoamers, since they may adversely affect the adhesion of the
paint to the reflective glass beads.

Precautions to be taken :
1. Maintain the paint pH at not less than 9.8. This should be checked at the end of the ‘grind’ stage and
again at the end of the manufacture.
2. Add the methanol before the Texanol in to the vortex & mix thoroughly. Do not premix the
methanol & Texanol.
