1. Answer the questions briefly.

(1) In a linear programming problem, the objective function and the constraints must
be linear functions of the decision variables.
a. True b. False

ANSWER: a. True

(2 )In a model, x1 > 0 and integer, x2 > 0, and x3 = 0,1. Which solution would not be
feasible?
a. x1 = 5, x2 = 3, x3 = 0
b. x1 = 4, x2 = .389, x3 = 1
c. x1 = 2, x2 = 3, x3 = .578
d. x1 = 0, x2 = 8, x3 = 0

ANSWER: c. x1 = 2, x2 = 3, x3 = .578

2. What are the applications of linear programming? Would you like to give an
example from your own observation? Answer the questions briefly.

Linear programming applications may include production scheduling, inventory

policies, investment portfolio, allocation of advertising budget, construction of
warehouses, etc. Linear programming is used to obtain optimal solutions for
operations research. Using linear programming allows researchers to find the best,
most economical solution to a problem within all of its limitations, or constraints.
Many fields use linear programming techniques to make their processes more
efficient. These include food and agriculture, engineering, transportation,
manufacturing and energy.

3. ABC Inc. manufactures two types of wooden toys: soldiers and trains. A soldier
sells for ¥27 and uses ¥10 worth of raw materials. Each soldier that is manufactured
increases ABC’s variable labor and overhead costs by ¥14. A train sells for ¥21 and
uses ¥9 worth of raw materials. Each train built increases ABC’s variable labor and
overhead costs by ¥10. The manufacture of wooden soldiers and trains requires two
types of skilled labor: carpentry and finishing. A soldier requires 2 hours of finishing
labor and 1 hour of carpentry labor. A train requires 1 hour of finishing and 1 hour of
carpentry labor. Each week, ABC can obtain all the needed raw material but only 100
finishing hours and 80 carpentry hours. Demand for trains is unlimited, but at most 40
soldier are bought each week.
ABC wants to maximize weekly profits (revenues - costs).
Formulate a model and then make the calculation for the problem.

Answer : I sent this via email.

4. Woodridge Pewter Company is a manufacturer of three pewter products: platters,

bowls, and pitchers.
The manufacture of each product requires Woodridge to have the appropriate
machinery and molds available. The machinery and molds for each product can be
rented at the following rates: for the platters, $400/week; for the bowls, $250/week;
for the pitcher, $300/week.
Each product requires the amounts of labor and pewter given in the table below. The
sales price and variable cost are also given in the table.

Question: Which products should be produced? Please build a model for the question.
Formulate a model and then make the calculation for the problem.
Answer : I sent this via email.
