Capstone Project Proposal

Name of student: _______Vlad Lavrinovich Date: 05/15/2023

Teacher: Ms. Browne Block: B

The Capstone strand I have chosen is Project

Proposed title for my Project Proposal: (write the proposed title for your Capstone Project in one clear

sentence):

YouTube Martial Art Channel That Busts Myths and Misconceptions About Fighting

_________________________________________________________________________________

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that
connects with a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that you
cannot just google an answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

How could my martial arts skills and experiences reach a larger audience and create and larger
impact on society as a whole?

For your inquiry question, you want to make it a little more broad. You can still ask the same style
of question, but make it less personal. For example: “Does providing accessible martial art
instructions to a larger audience help create a culture of safety in society” or make safety more
assessible, etc. Remove the “my”.

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect to
your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

My inquiry is of this nature because I have noticed a lot of discrepancies about actual fighting
online; be it movies, media, video games, opinions from people, and ad infinitum. As a martial arts
practitioner and enthusiast of over 15 years overall experience, seeing bad fight scenes in
Hollywood movies or hearing delusional people talking about fighting has always troubled me. This
is why I would like to make a YouTube channel dedicated to disproving much of the disinformation
about martial arts or combat in general, while also showing proper martial arts techniques and

4
skills.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this area of

inquiry?

I have experience of over 11 years of Taekwondo, 3 years of Muay Thai, 1 year experience of
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, 1 and a half years’ experience in Judo. I also take interest in historical martial
arts such as HEMA fencing, Buhurt, Kendo and Kendo. I have been also very interested in taking
freestyle wrestling and MMA. I have also learned how to use editing software a few years before
hand because of things such as projects, and memes.

Did you also have experience teaching martial arts as well? Volunteering in that area? What
specifically do you know about editing software?

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What connections
does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

I want to become an electrician. While my capstone doesn’t really have anything to do with my
career path, I could take some lessons I learned from my capstone and apply it to my intended
career e.g., collecting information about a topic, teaching and demonstrating, etc.

What else? You have a great line of thought- keep going! I am learning ____ in my capstone. I
have learnt this, and it will help me in life for example....

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core
competencies will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections. (Must
include reference to ALL 6 Core competencies).

Creative thinking, communication, personal and cultural identity, critical thinking, personal
awareness and responsibility

Content creation on YT is seemingly easy, however a lot of core competencies go into this field of
work. You need to be creative and have good communication skills in order to succeed as a
content creator, however you must also learn how to pace yourself so you don’t fall apart from
overwork. The type of channel I’m planning on creating is also a critique channel, so critical thinking
is an essential core competency. My personal identity also has a part to play in this, due to the
nature of this channel I will have to apply my personal experiences and skills I have learned over
the years in order to make content.

You will want to specifically mention how your capstone related to each core competency. Communication- I do this, this
came up here, I improved upon this here..

4
Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to present
your project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once completed. You
may use a combination of mediums.
o Electronic portfolio: Prezi or o Website
PPT o imovie presentation
o Physical portfolio o YouTube channel

o YouTube Channel
What else...

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what will
you research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced at the end
of this project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your proposal.
I will research online resources such as other martial artists’ YouTube channels, articles, historical
records/manuals, and I might also consult with people that have combat experience that I already
know personally. I will also try checking my hypothesis in a simulated combat scenario. For the
YouTube channel I will look at successful YouTube videos and analyze all the parts of them that
made them popular e.g. thumbnail, content, and length. I will consult some of my friends to help me
edit and produce these videos. I will create a separate Gmail for this project, and a brand-new
YouTube channel alongside it. Since brand new channels rarely get exposure, I will most likely start
doing shortform content supplemented by a main video. YouTube often pushes random content
from small creators which can often be viewed hundreds of times with the YT Shorts feature,
whereas the actual long form videos are often times swallowed by the algorithm. Photo editing
software such as photoshop or video editing software can be pirated in a safe manner, which I’m
planning on doing. I will try to market my videos by researching thumbnails and titles of popular
YouTube videos, since that is what draws most people in, in the first place. I will create a minimum
of 2 videos talking about different topics; they will be accompanied by YT Shorts which will just be
clips from the video itself edited in an interesting manner. The videos will be produced with
cameras, music, and the materials referenced in the video e.g., a short clip from a Hollywood action
movie. To create a video, I will first pick a topic of interest out of a list of brainstormed topics, then
I will do some background research and testing, and finally if the content is satisfactory, I will then
proceed to produce and publish the video. Producing the video would incorporate things such as
filming the content, editing the content, and cutting out unnecessary moments/bloopers, producing
an eye-catching thumbnail, and then picking an attention-grabbing title. Uploads would also have to
be scheduled during the times when the most amount of people sit down and watch YouTube.

This needs to be updated and specific to how things have changed. You know what your videos
are about as you’ve already started filming. Talk about your script writing, your voice overs, what
you did specifically when you were filming each thing, etc.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and skills you
will need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to access/learn all of the
resources necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail your plans.

All I need is a PC, editing software, camera, microphone, and a place to film my videos. The

4
procurement of the necessary materials is quite simple, and I already have all of them. My phone
doubles as a camera and mic, and I can also do most of my editing on an app called CapCut. I
could film my videos in different locations such as my martial arts gym, or my home gym. I have
used this editing software before so I don’t need to worry about learning it, however I will need to
learn how to create an enticing thumbnail and how to film a video.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will you

need to help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you? What is your
plan to access the mentorship/community connections necessary for this project?

I already have mentors I personally know; however, I also know many online creators that I could
contact and perhaps even collaborate with in order to satisfy the requirements for this project.
All of these mentors are experienced martial artists. They could help me by giving my
suggestions/feedback about the content of my videos, or even help me demonstrate it in a better
way.

4
Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee that
might affect progress with your Capstone Project?

I am not photogenic nor am I charismatic, so I believe it would be hard for me to be on camera and
film myself and upload that to the internet. I will also lack time in order to actually fulfill this
capstone since I am already incredibly busy with many other things, considering filming and
producing content is usually very time consuming; many people do it as a full-time job.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about your
project that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

My knowledge is limited and may not be completely factual or may not apply in some
circumstances e.g. I am not qualified in talking about firefights or tactics employed by British troops
in WW2.
