ghost

in the wall
A LIVE CINEMA PERFORMANCE
BY KARLA KRACHT
synopsis.
A magical sequence of weird occurrences. Rotating
platforms, comic-like objects and characters, loops,
soundscape and moving shadows are combined
to create a magical experience and let the viewer
dive into the improbable world of ghostly-dark and
frightening-dreamy coincidences, where all seems
connected and everything and nothing seems pos-
sible.
The shadows of the past. The shadows of the pres-
ent. Our own shadows melt with those of the others.
The ghosts of our own fears... a chaos of interwoven
situations...
An installation about the non-quantifiable, about
very old inner fears and outer projections of com-
mon panics.
about.
INTRODUCTION.
Ghost in the wall departs from an experimental investigation
about coincidences, leading quickly towards the blurry and
dark world of dreams, ghosts and fears.
It was created and inspired in several travels to Taiwan,
where ghosts are omnipresent. The climax is hungry
ghost month, when the gate opens and spirits come to
join the human world and mess around like hell. Humans
live in function of the ghosts’ desires and demands and
even change their habits, becoming are restricted in their
actions.
In each place this performance is shown, new local
ghosts and stories are added, such as Andean Pre-Inka
spirits, french Gargoyles or the nightmares of a Polish
fairy tale...
This works mixes the physical sensations of common
panics, nightmares and existential fears with the feeling
of living in a very dark place during ghost month where
only Pokemon catchers illuminate the blackness of the
night.
Formally it is an animated theatrical Mini-Object and
Live Cinema performance.

experience Ghost in the wall adapts to specific space and logistic conditions.
So far, it has taken shape - amongst others - as room-filling
indoors performance, 360º video performance using 10
projectors and surround sound. Or video mapped into the arches
of an old bishop’s palace and as a nightly outdoor show.

LIVE CINEMA PERFORMANCE

The viewer encounters a very dark space.
Miniature sets of dreamlike situations, theatrically
set on stage. Small ceramic objects and comic-like
figures merely lit. Tiny colourful lights and a huge
cinema projection are the only light sources. Other
sets produce big shadows. Small motors and analogue
mechanisms move some of the sets, making the
characters rotate and slide. They have altering
velocities and different distances, like a shadow
play, creating surprising connections.
These small animation film sets are recorded in
real time and simultaneously projected onto the big
screen. The live images are processed and
manipulated in the computer, using specific multi-
media software. They are mixed with pre-recorded
2D animation and shadows. The audience can see
the finished film at the same time as witnessing its
making.
A powerful soundtrack of electronic music allows
the viewer to totally immerse into this tiny world of
ghosts and dreams.
