1.2 Problem statement

Time management is very important because an effective time management is linked to

higher academic achievement and decreased levels of anxiety in students; nonetheless, many
students struggle to strike a balance between their academics and their daily life (V.Adams,
2019). The shortage of time being one of the primary reasons why students disengage and stop
studying and this is due to the fact that the experiences of time spent in higher education have
gotten little attention (Louise Webber, 2020). Additionally, family time is also important and we
need to manage it wisely because from the researcher from Patricia A Thomas et al., 2017 said
that as people age, their needs for caregiving grow, and their social ties in places like the
workplace become less important, family relationships may become even more important to
their happiness.

Despite the inherent difficulty of balancing academic and family responsibilities, a

growing number of parents are seeking higher education. Furthermore, many of these student
parents also work to help pay for their education and take care of their kids at the same time,
which can slow down their educational progress (Sandstrom et al., 2019). Moreover, the
researcher from Sandstrom et al., 2019, also said that the difficulty of balancing work and
education while parenting might cause parents of young children to delay successful completion
of coursework and graduation on time. Hence, from this we notice that too many responsibilities
at the same time will cause trouble for those who can’t manage their time properly. Students
who lack the ability to manage their time effectively have a harder problem organising their
study schedules, which in turn increases their stress levels and leads them to make careless
mistakes leading up to the final exam (Adham Alyami et al., 2021).

A lack of effective time management may cause a major source of stress (Sajjad Kabir,
2017). According to a research by Ordibenheshti Khiaban et al., 2017, the participants who
involved with the research felt so much stress and frequently worry about their children and also
their studies at the same time. This is because they felt selfish because they couldn’t look after
their children perfectly. It has been shown that parents suffer stress when they are confronted
with parental demands that are at variance with their own or others' expectations, or when they
are unable to satisfy these needs due to a lack of available resources (Gerard et al., 2020).
Thus, parental stress is a modifiable element that may cause to young children's mental health
issues (Hattangadi et al., 2020). Children's development is greatly influenced by their time spent
with their parents, and their happiness is a key sign of how well they are doing mentally
(Dongxu Li and Xi Guo, 2022).

Therefore, all of the problems stated above should be consider in this study as it might
be the reason of some PJJ students in UiTM Shah Alam drop out from their studies. They might
find it hard to balance their time with studies, working and also their family. Keeping track of
their busy schedules is one of the hardest things for parents who work and go to school
as parents not only have to find time for work and school, but they also have to find time to care
for their kids, study, and do other chores around the house, all while still being able to spend
time with their kids (Sandstrom et al., 2019). Despite being busy, parents should manage their
time properly to avoid any overwork and stress that will affect their mental and physical health.
