COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN/ COMPUTER AIDED MANUFACTURING

2.0 OBJECTIVES
 To apply knowledge of Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided
Manufacturing.
 To learn to use CNC milling machines.
 To use safety and precautions during lab sessions.

3.0 INTRODUCTION
CNC machining is the most widely used subtractive manufacturing technologyIn CNC,
material is removed from a solid block using a variety of cutting tools to produce a part based
on a CAD model. Both metals and plastics can be machined with CNC.
CNC produces parts with tight tolerances and excellent material properties. CNC is
suitable for both one-off jobs and low-to-medium volume production (up to 1000 parts),
due to its high repeatability. When compared to 3D printing though, CNC has more design
restriction, due to the subtractive nature of the technology.
In this article, the differences between the two main CNC machine setups (milling and
turning) are first explained, and then, the characteristics of the process are discussed. After
reading this article, you will have an overview of the basic principles of the technology and
how these relate to its key benefits and limitations.

7.0 DISCUSSION

The usage of computers has contributed to the revolution and changes in industry
operations. Computer-aided manufacturing is currently present in the form of superior
hardware and software in almost every industry. The majority of manufacturing is
controlled by specialist software. As a result, it is not only the hardware that is responsible
for plant automation, but also the critical software. Manufacturing with computers.
Computer aided manufacturing, or CAM, is the use of computers to guide the operation of
industrial processes.
By deploying real-time systems and robotics, any factory can become highly automated.
Because it can control the production house using many automated ways, a CAM system is
extremely efficient. The goal of CAM is to ensure that the error rate is reduced, product
consistency is high, and process precision is achieved. CAM activities are now found in
practically every industry. It aids in the elimination of errors in fundamental manufacturing
processes and can also keep track of future orders and material requirements.
8.0 CONCLUSION
Based on prior data, the CAD/CAM approach appears to be the most popular technology
available in the office at the moment, and it is fast, easy, and time consuming. Because
CAD/CAM systems vary, having an appropriate system with a rational approach to treating
patients is essential.
