TITLE: Bacteria Growth

PROBLEM STATEMENT: How clean is a kitchen counter compared to a toilet seat?

HYPOTHESIS: If gummy bears fall on a kitchen counter for ten seconds, then there will be
fewer bacterial growth compared to if it is dropped on a toilet seat.

AIM: To learn the difference in bacterial growth on gummy bears dropped on kitchen counter
compared to toilet seat within ten seconds using a transparent grid.

MATERIALS: Timer
Gummy bears
Petri Dish
Agar
Kitchen Counter
Bathroom Toilet Seat
Q-tip
Gloves
Marker
Transparent Grid

PROCEDURE:

1. Prepare 50 cm³ agar in fifteen petri dishes.

2. With a gloved hand, retrieve five gummy bears and swab each with a different Q-tip.
Swab the Q-tip on agar within a petri dish, cover and label it control group.
3. Place five gummy bears unto a kitchen counter for ten seconds each.
4. After the time is up, swab the side of the gummy bear that was in contact with the kitchen
counter and swab the Q-tip unto the agar.
5. Repeat this five times, cover the petri dish and label each kitchen counter group.
6. Repeat this process for bathroom toilet seat group.
7. Tape the lids of each petri dish and record results of each trial using a transparent grid
over the next seven days and finding an average.
8. Repeat the experiment three more times.

SURFACES

TREATMENT OF RESULTS: If the gummy bears from the kitchen counter have less bacterial
growth surface area than toilet seat groups then the hypothesis is
supported. Any other outcome will reject the hypothesis.

Average= trial 1+ trial 2+ trial 3+ trial 4+ trial 5

EXPECTED RESULTS: Because kitchen counters do not come in contact with as much bacteria
as a toilet seat, it is expected that the kitchen counter groups will have
less bacteria.

SOURCE OF ERROR/PRECAUTION: One source of error would be using the same gloves for
each experiment, as this could cross contaminate and
provide inaccurate results. A precaution would be to
ensure the agar petri dishes are properly sealed so no
dust or other organisms may enter.
