Tools and Equipment in Cooking

Cake Pan – designed to bake a cake in an oven. It can be


made of metal, silicon, heat-proof glass, ceramic of
terracotta. Most metal ones made now have non-stick
surfaces. Cake pans can be used casseroles, squares, no-
bake desserts, layered party dips, etc.

Muffin Pan – used for holding batters or mixers while they bake in the
oven. Muffin pans usually made to make muffins and cupcakes. Other
uses for muffin pans include homemade peanut butter, baked egg
cups, or even some types of no-bake deserts.

Jelly Roll Pan – is a flat, medium-sized baking pan meant


for baking the sponge cake part of a jelly roll. It consists of
a piece of thin cake rolled into a cylinder with icing or jelly
lining the inside.

Custard Cups – is a small glass bowl usually with a handle


and either a short stem or no stem between the foot and the
bowl. They were made for serving individual portions of
custard.

Loaf Pan – also called bread pan is a kitchen utensil in


the form of a container in which bread is baked. Its
function is to shape bread while it is rising during
baking. The most common shape of the bread pan is the
loaf, or narrow rectangle, a convenient form that enables
uniform slicing.
Cutting Tools – include knife and chopping board that
are used to cut glazed fruit, nut, or other ingredients in
baking.

Electric Mixer – it helps automate the repetitive task


of stirring, whisking or beating. When the beaters are
replaced by a dough hook, a mixer may also be used
to knead. A mixer may be a handled mechanism
known as an eggbeater, a handled motorized beater,
or a drill mixer.
Flour Sifter – is typically a basket made of metal fine-mesh
weave with a handle attached. Its job is to aerate and
separate dry ingredients like flour, cocoa powder, and
powdered sugar, which will lead to a lighter and more tender
crumb in baked goods.

Kitchen Shear – made with a plastic or rubber coated


handle which are often textured allowing for ease of cutting
and gripping. The blades have a notch for cutting through
poultry joints.

Measuring Cup – is a kitchen utensil used primarily to


measure the volume of liquid or bulk solid cooking
ingredients such as flour and sugar.

Measuring Glass – are usually glass or plastic with a handle.


They allow you to pour a liquid into the cup and bring it even
with a measurement line without spilling.

Measuring Spoon – is used to measure an amount of an


ingredient, either liquid or dry, when cooking. Measuring
spoon maybe made of plastic, metal, and other materials.
They are available in many sizes, including the teaspoon and
tablespoon.
Mixing Bowls – are used for storage, working doughs, mixing dry
ingredients, mixing salads, organizing, and more.

Paring Knife – also called peeling knife are very versatile, and a
mainstay of the professional kitchen as a result. Many cooks use
them to peel or cut fruit and vegetables into small pieces, or to
carry out other similar precision work.

Pastry Bag - or piping bag is an often cone or triangular-


shaped, hand-held bag made from different pliable and
food safe materials that is used to pipe semi-solid foods by
pressing them through a narrow opening at one end, fitted
with or without a piping tip. It is used for many purposes
including cake decoration.

Pastry Brush – use for applying egg wash or glaze to


delicate doughs and pastry or butter/oil to phyllo dough;
brushing crumbs from cake layers.

Pastry Tip – are the nozzles on the end of a pastry bag


that the frosting or filling is forced through to apply sizes
and designs available, which will allow you to make most
any type of design and allow you to do a lot of creative
decorating.

Rolling Pins – are used to evenly flatten everything from


pie and pastry doughs to cookie and pasta doughs.

Rubber Scrapers – made to scrape pastes, batters, and


other ingredients from bowls, plates, and other
surfaces. A rubber scraper is handy in the kitchen
since it can be mold to the shape of the bowl or
whatever container you are using to get every last bit
out.
Spatula – is a kitchen utensil that use to mix, scrape,
flip, or spread ingredients.

Strainer – is a wire-mesh silicone or metal kitchen sieve


that chefs and home cooks use to separate liquids from
fine solids in cooking. Often in situations where small
solids or pieces of sediments require finer filtration.

Timer – is a device whose primary function is to assist


in timing during cooking.

Weighing Scale – is an instrument that is used to


determine the weight or mass of an object.

Utility Tray – It can be used for mixing liquids, to


containing leaks, to transferring products from
container to pails. Even when sorting new products and
cleaning parts.

Wire Whisk – a kitchen utensils used to whip an aerate


cream, meringue, and stir light sauces and butter in
pans.
Wooden Spoon – is a spoon used for stirring sauces and for
mixing ingredients in cooking. It is made of wood and has a
long handle.

Oven – are used as a kitchen appliance for roasting and


heating. Foods normally cooked in this manner include
meat, casseroles and baked goods such as bread, cake and
other desserts.

PPE or Personal Protective Equipment – is a very


important aspect in ensuring safety in food manufacturing
plant. As food handling safety tools, they provide a barrier
between the contributing factors and the workers. This is
crucial in the food processing industry where most
operations are done by hand.
